    Guys,

if I was to purchase a secondhand car and drive it back to the UK. How long could I keep it on it's foreign plates before having to officially register it over here.

Used to be "6 months" but this is somewhat vague. Legally speaking, you drive the car back, get it MOT'ed, drive it straight home and then go to the DVLC with the MOT (if applicable), Type Approval Certificate (if applicable), Insurance Certificate and pays yoru money and then wait to be allocated a plate/tax disc. Fit the plate and drive your car.

To be honest, get the car registered ASAP and don't mess about with leaving it on EU plates. Why? A few reasons:

    1) Old Bill are getting pissed off with people taking liberties in bus lanes, congestion charge, speed cameras offences, parking tickets, etc. The sudden influx of EU cars in the country has made an EU registered car a beacon for pulling people over-my work collegue got pulled over in her German Plated Fiesta. They are now taking her to court over it.

    2) Although you can insure a car on a chassis number, if you have an accident I can guareentee the insurance company will not pay out-how do I know, it happened to me and after 5 "investiagtions" and a numerous fights with the insuance company (a well known motor trade policy), we got a pay out-no where near what the car was worth.

    3) Also personal experience of being caught on "foreign plates" meant a total fine of nearly £700 (backdated tax, fine and legal "costs") and a magistrates court appearance. Fine is based upon income and other variables-they can ask for evidence of proof of income. I do not think its fair that I got done as much as that, where as a chav with no job gets fined peanuts for committing GBH.

All summed up, don't do it. But its down to you
