Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have the opportunity to buy a Testarossa gearbox that is in good condition. Due to the fact that the TR’s gearbox is a weak point and, from my understanding, a rebuild is around $50k with a lot of fabrication required. Would it maybe be a good idea to have a spare one?

I own a few other classic cars and I keep several spare NLA and hard to find parts on hand. In one case I even bought a parts car.

Have seen good used ones for under $10k, so it would depend on the price.

7-9 k UAD is a very good price, however more important is that the gearbox is in good condition. It is always better to have some spare parts because the TR spare parts are difficult to find and they will continue to increase.

I have one revised for my competition with special manufactured in- and output shafts (crown gear ), gears and diff from modena and new bearings. only parts have been around 30.000 €
have also 3 more housings and parts for making one more gearbox.
they are getting not more, so when you can get one and the housing is not damaged and the price is ok then take it. even you may not use it you could sell it later for the same or more what you paid

We all buy auto insurance and pay for it. Having a spare transmission is a form of self insurance, Peace of mind knowing if something catastrophic happened to your transaxle, you have spares is well worth it. Hunting for rare and expensive parts is not fun. I bought a complete parts car that was in a fire, but NOT so bad the car melted into a pile of metal. The gas tanks were in fact undamaged and I used the gas in my pick up truck. So I KNOW the internals of the transaxle are probably unscathed. The value of your transmission will always be there and probably increase above inflation. Look at it as an investment both monetarily and peace of mind. I'd jump at the chance.
