I'm learning the hard way that buying a vacuum is much like buying a car. Spending more money doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a better product.
This is what I've learned so far, the famous Dyson vacuum looks cool but isn't all that great, the Sebo is considered one of the best but also carries a $700 pricetag. I'm not married so I need all the advice I can get... I've relied on maid service before but I think I need to get one of these things for myself besides, my gf is on my case about this. Any recommendations??

Ha This thread is too funny! I was Vac shopping today and finaly found a have decent vac for a fair price. Its not a stand-up unit but one of those ones that rolls around on wheels, and has an electric beater bar (as they call it). It made by Royal (they are the same company as DirtDevil). Great vac for lots of carpet, and it even has a headlight on it! I paid 249CND on sale price..regular 345 ( I had some kind of coupon thingie) Good little vac and it does the job quite well.

i also saw the crazy priced units, I saw one for 2400 bucks! Crazy..

I will always be a Bissel man myself. Having perfected getting laid by cleaning the house, I think I can speak with some authority. I am currently running a 12 Amp Cleanview Bagless. These are hearty machines and can take my constant abuse, like sucking up socks and tee shirts. Also masses of dog hair is no problem for this little sweetheart. I once sucked a shop rag out of a 250 GT intake with it. My hero.

Are you serious? Go to the Sears outlet buy whatever is cheap, if it breaks buy another one. Its only carpet.

Well, I can assure everyone within the range of my post, that Kirby is over-priced, over-hyped, drek.

My ex shelled out $1400.00 of my hard earned money to a friend that started selling Kirbys. This thing is loud, dirty, and obnoxious. The cord holder broke off in a month, and the bags fill up overnight. We got the malignant carpet shampoo-er as A bonus. Yeah......quite a bonus......won't shampoo anything tougher than tap water off the carpet.

I would heave the damn thing out......but I keep it just to pi$$ of the ex.

I have a Kirby. The salesman just happened to knock on my door when I needed a vacuum and I bought it. Although I've had it for like 7 years now, I'd have to agree that the carpet shampooer attachment sucks. It does work well as a vacuum, but it is much heavier than most vacuums so it is a pain in the butt to lug upstairs.

It was kind of funny, a year after I bought the Kirby G5, I got a call from the Kirby people asking me if I'd like to upgrade to the new Kirby G6. I was like, "Wait a minute, a year ago when I bought this one you guys told me it was the last vacuum cleaner I'd ever have to buy."

In hind sight, I think I would have been better off with a Kenmore canister vac and a separate carpet steam cleaner. Probably would have been cheaper to buy those 2 things than the Kirby.

A Kirby is like a Bugatti Veyron. It's way too heavy, and it sort of sucks....

Our Hoover Wind Tunnel is a real belt-burner. And I thought old dog fuzz in the vacuum cleaner bag smelled bad.

    How about those recipes?

Oreck XL. Very light and easy to operate. Seems to work fine, especially on stairs where lugging a heavy vacuum can be a challenge for some ladies. Too bad no ladies ever use mine. LOL

I have a eureka and its great- still uses bags, very light and everything and only a few hundred. More than a few hundred is nuts for a vaccuum. Also check out the roomba those things are fun hehe

I can't believe this. Just today my wife and I went to look for a new vac. (How exciting!) At least we took the 355. Almost came home with the Dyson but I didn't know anything about them. Thanks for posting the Consumer Report rating. I was trying to get a copy without paying :) Where else but FerrariChat!

If you're looking for a new vac, I'd keep your eye on ebay. I picked up a Sebo C3.1 for a little over 1/2 retail a while back & couldn't be happier. It picks up cat hair like crazy & the triple filtration keeps away that nasty "just vacuumed" smell.
