As a European there is truly only one car to get there, a Competizione. This is the ultimate model of the 348 line. Fairly scarce, but not impossible to find.

as a long time 348 owner and user, I'd also say an example that has been maintained correctly, used, nothing worse than having a car sitting around doing nothing for months on end. Make sure there is a correct history with the car, not only a fully stamped maintenance card but also all the bills so you can see what has been done and the correct parts have been used. For a first Ferrari I'd keep to a car that is as original as possible with out too many after market extras or modifications to make the car that bit more powerful/faster etc. In the main Ferrari know what they are doing and parts are selected for a purpose. Nothing worse than having a car looking like a tart from Bugis Street.
Research, Research, Research. There are a lot of neglected 348s out there. I agree with Blackspider. Well maintained (with records) and used on a regular basis are the key. These cars do not react well to sitting around.
Just like a well kept women; a good example should be tight, in feel and performance. No extra rattles or hestitations and always willing to please.
