My parents are looking into buying a 1987 328 GTS for themselves after seeing an add in the FCA monthly newsletter. Since I know the best place to go to get personal opinons and information they wanted me to find out what questions to ask the seller. The car is in Ohio and we're in Kirkland Washington so we can't go and check it out in person beforehand.

Here is the description as it appears in the FCA newsletter:

    1987 328 GTS, S/N 68673. Red/Tan. 11,500 miles. Very good condition. Books, tools. $49,500.

    The rest was contact information.

So, is $49,500 a good price for this 328? We don't have any pictures of the car yet but we e-mailed him and asked for pictures as well as more information on the car.

    Thanks guys.

Depends on condition of car. $49k is an "ASKING PRICE". I'm betting $41k to $45k will be selling price.

Where in Ohio? If near Columbus I can give you a couple shop names (I used to live there and I was a board member on the Ohio Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America... I should be able to dig up a contact or two). YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy long distance without having a third party shop you choose do a mechanical inspection.

Good looking car, good mechanical condition = bargain.
Good looking car, bad mechanical condition = heartache and an expensive one at that.

p.s. Personally I'm not into low mileage cars... they feel (to me) like a timebomb but others have different opinions. All seals/gaskets, all hoses, etc. go bad with time regarless of use.. and sometimes quicker when not used. This is a 18 to 19 year old used car... you're looking at an average of less than 650 miles per year on this car to date.... what was the owner afraid of? Were they not maintaining it based on time? Has it had the 30k service (every 30k or 5-7 years)...

One of the critical steps would be to get all the maintenance & repair records faxed to them. Have the seller send overall pictures of the exterior, as well as detailed interior & engine compartment ones and some detailed exterior ones.
If this is a mechanicaly sound car, the 328 in general is fairly bulletproof. (and a beautiful car in red/tan, but then I'm biased)

You could also try posting a thread in the local section where the car is located. See if an F-chatter in the area will go look at it first. I'd bet you get more than one offer of help!

Someone else had a deposit on the car already when we sent him an e-mail asking about the condition of the car.

Anyone know of a Red/Tan 1987 328 for sale in the Washington area?

Oh, and thanks for all the helpfull replies! :)

    David,

I have one for sale but it's silver with black interior. When I bought this car, I originally was looking for a red one as well, but I saw this car and fell for the color. The car's classic shape seems to be accentuated more in silver than in red. Anyway, if you are interested, please let me know. I just got the car back yesterday from its timing belt service/alternator rebuild/check up so the car is ready to go. I have full records on the car.

I'm familiar with Mike's car - and his healthy/obsessive maintenance of it. It's a beauty. The silver works very well on the 328.

Is it an 87? I'd like to see it in person and possibly talk about price if it's an 87.

*Edit* I just read in another post of yours where you said that it is an 87. So, I will send you a PM with more questions :)

Regardless of year, you should look at as many cars in person as you can, to get a feel for condition and orginality.

This is true. I should look at many different year 328's. However, Mom and Dad want an 87 because that's the year I was born :)

14 months ago there was a nice '86 down in Sacramento. Unfortunately for you, I bought it and it's now in my garage here in Georgia!

You're a lucky kid--my parents were never into cars. To have a Ferrari in the family at the age of 17/18 is good fortune.

(And BTW, I'm a former resident of Lynnwood and Bellevue so I know where you're at!)

I do consider myself a lucky kid :) I hope that no one will picture me as the kind of kid who was raised in a rich snobby family. I never dreamed that my mom of all people would think it was a good idea to look around for a Ferrari to buy. I'll be in a state of disbelief if there is a Ferrari parked in our garage a couple months from now. And I will have to pinch myself if she lets me drive it to a Ferrari meet. Seriously, look for red pinch marks on my arms if I drive a Ferrari to a meet sometime in the summer. :)

I will be in town on Seafair race weekend. I'd like to meet you and your family and see the Ferrari in your garage (hopefully!). BTW, I expect to be conducting tours at the hydroplane pits; if you have any interest, come on down and let me show you around!

Well I'm pretty sure we'll be here when Seafair comes. That would be cool to take a tour around the hydroplane pits :) You're more than welcome to come and check on the Ferrari if we have one by then. Hopefully we'll have one in just a couple of months. Maybe I'll get to drive my girlfriend to prom in a Ferrari if the weather is nice :D My Ferrari day dreams are becoming more frequent after our visit to see and get a ride in Mike C's silver 328.

Thanks for checking my car out. You and your family seem nice. It reminds me how enjoyable it can be to share with folks the passion for cars especially F-cars; I should attend more of the local FCA events. It's raining hard here right so it's a good thing you came to see the car when you did. I remember that you took some photos; how did they turn out?

Silver 328s are rather rare, and this looks like a nice one. A black interior would be impractical here in "Hotlanta" but would work very well in your cool Northwest clime.

David, I hope you and your family find success in getting a car. I'll PM you shortly before my Seattle visit in August. Hopefully it'll stop raining by then (as it usually does!).

(Meanwhile, check my South Central forum posts to see how much fun we're having down here in Georgia!)
