I know this is not about F cars but maybe this group can give me some input. I am buying a 2003 Mercedes 500sl from one of Herb Chambers dealerships- the BMW store. I am in Idaho and will be shipping the car to Maui. They are having their Mercedes dealership inspect it for me. This will be a sight unseen purchase except for pictures. Can anybody give me any opinions as to what kind of operation they run and are they a reputable company. Any opinions would be appreciated.
    TIA
    Al LaPeter
PS- I have put up a $1000 deposit subject to inspection

imo, you're insane having them inspect it. you're asking for trouble. it's a used car, you are toast the minute it crosses state lines.

only if maybe they were one of the highest-rep dealers on planet earth would i do that - maybe.

i've bought cars from chambers dealers before. they're car dealers, not saints.

my favorite herb chambers story was when they were trying to close out the quarter and my incoming car was supposedly on the truck but not yet arrived. they lied to me and told me the car was ON THE LOT and to come in to pay for it by end of business the next day. i eventually figured out that they were yanking my chain when they couldn't give me the VIN number.

they're not bad people. they're just car dealers (with apologies to all the car dealers here!).

i've tried repeatedly to do biz with their mb/porsche guys (in somerville ma) but could never get a deal done - stories on cars (don't get me started on a used 996 i test-drove there), wacky prices (some impressive mb stuff on new in-demand models), etc.

2003 SLs are a dime a dozen - you can't find one in ID or HI?

Herb Chambers is a well-known, well advertised chain of dealerships here in New England. That's about all I can tell you, having never done business with them.

I found the salesperson to be rude. He also didnt know anything about his product. It seemed like he trained at Duddie Ford.
I dont think I'll shop them again.
    Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Doody. I bought a Turbo Cab from them in '03. Let's just say if I didn't really want the car, I would have gone elsewhere. They're a little to slick for me.

Thanks everybody, I sent the wire and the car is being shipped. I'll let you know in January what happens. I was dealing with Jim McKenzie and he seemed great on the phone. The car did have the MBz certification inspection and it did pass muster. In the last 8 months I bought a 2003 360 spider (from a fellow fchatter) and a 2003 500sl sight unseen. I hope both purchases are great experiences.
