i am looking at buying two nice pieces, one is 70" x 40" in New Mexico, and having shipped to Florida. Price is approx. $12K. Any advice on insuring? Should i hold onto some money to have right to inspect (haven't seen pieces in person)? What is the "usual" practice in this situation? Many thanks in advance. Rob
either travel and see them yourself or get a trusted gallery/expert who's local to check them out for you.
Inspect the work yourself and have an art moving company like Artex ( Landover MD) move the work. I work as a fine art aprpaiser and that the best way to do it.
thanks guys, unfortunately with work being what it is i can't make it to santa fe to inspect. it is new work by artist cody hooper.... codyhooperart.com. he uses a santa fe art delivery company and says they are great. check out his website please and let me know what you think...never have dob ne this before and appreciate any red flags you pick up on... of course i know this is an open forum and all that entails. again many thanks for any n "non professional, unpaid, non business relationship" advice.
I would think that the artist would be willing to insure the work, especially since he using a delivery company that he trusts. You should also ask for permission to inspect the work upon arrival before the balance is paid. As an artist and a former gallery owner, I think that most artist are quite truthful about the condition of their pieces and would do everything possible to ensure their safe arrival. I went to his website by the way. He has some really impressive pieces.
the gallery said they would ship the art and only bill my amex if i am satisfied with the arrival condition. his art is beautiful is it not! thanks all. rob
impressive work! the gold leaf work is especially nice. And i especially like Sante Fe Vibe. ps i have to seriously re-evaluate my price list... GT
Nice work. Should be good as an art transport company is doing the shipping, but ask who is insuring it via transport.
do you think that is necessary if they agreed to only bill me if i am satisfied? i have that in writing...gallery in santa fe seems very easy to deal with (thus far). thanks.
I haven't purchased art from that particular gallery, but have from Ventana, about 200' up Canyon Road from where you found your pieces. Of the pieces I bought from Ventana (John Axton and Ted Larson), not only has the gallery taken care of all aspects of delivery, including insurance, but they have also shipped a piece to me that I had only seen online so that I could "test-drive" it in my house. If I didn't like it, I could have sent it back and we would have simply split the shipping (I've ended up keeping it!). I would push the gallery you are dealing with to do the same.
rec'd art pieces today in perfect condition, excellent transaction. mcclarry modern was gallery in santa fe, and pilot was delivery company.
Thoughtful of you to post that update. Place it someplace you like & most importantly, try not to daydream about it while driving.
