I need some suggestions for buying parts from a private individual. How would you guys safe-guard the transaction? I don't want to just wire someone the money and hope they show up..... I have considered c.o.d., but don't know that is acceptable to the seller. Someone else suggested the items be put on e-bay for me to bid on. Thanks in advance for any info, Scott

What would you do for an out of state transaction and then decide if this is really so different

There's the Paypal buyer protection for non-ebay items

You could ask in the UK section if anyone wants to referee

or if its not much money you could try good old fashioned trust !

Get a 3rd party involved, say a dealer in the UK.

Send a pm to one of the fchatters in England for a reference.
Ask seller if he has feedback on ebay.
Get pictures of the part from the seller.
What kind of part? Some are riskier than others to buy used.

I thought about the reference idea, but don't know anyone over there well enough for that to be comfortable.

The paypal guarantee only covers up to like 250.

The parts are around a grand. I can afford to gamble, but don't want to take that kind of a beating......

If they were in the us I could just go and pick them up!! Thanks for the input, Scott

Why not take a look at the UK section here or the UK Ferrari site and just scout around to see if the vendor's name comes up ?

The UK 348 world isn't that big and thats one of the purposes of fora

Oh and with respect I don't believe you'd drive a four thousand mile round trip all the way to Los Angeles or wherever for a thousand bucks of parts - you could practically fly to England for less than the fuel would cost !

The mans name is Michael James here on f-chat. I'm sure he is a stand-up guy. He has a couple hundred post on here and is in London area I think. He was able to set-up an e-bay auction for me and we are doing it that way. Hopefully all will work out well. Thanks for the offer to check things out, Scott

    CSCOTT67,

I'm based in London and can figure my way around parts etc. (check my posts) If you need to have it vetted and safely sent over, I can act as a bridge. If the part is good, I can buy it on your behalf, then hold it for you to send a shipping agent to pick it up. You can either refund me when I pick it up, or when you receive it, and chuck 5% on top for all the exhange rates etc.

If it is not a big/heavy/obviously expensive item, I can send it over as a used spare part and reduce the customs exposure.

    Marco
