What can I do to buy something from the internet and make sure the deal is safe? I'm looking at a Pioneer deck for a car and there's one that's not extraordinarily cheap but pretty darn cheap. The seller claims to have a few in stock.

He says he'll ship UPS 2nd day air for free (with insurance). He says he would like to use Western Union for getting the money to him: I don't know how eBay works, but I thought WU was a pretty secure way of sendeing money.

If anyone can help me out with buying this to make sure I don't get scammed, that'd be awesome. Thanks :)

If it's ebay, use your American Express thru PayPal. That's about three layers of "protection" and about the best you can do. Good luck.

Credit Card, Cash on delivery, Escrow or Paypal....all give you some degree of protection that you wont be ripped off........Western union ensures he gets the payment not that you get your goods

I have a Paypal account, I'm thinking of asking him to accept the payment through that. If he refuses, no deal.

Paypal isn't always safe. I bought a Xbox 360 for $450 on Ebay when they were tough to get. The guy had 5 or so posted. All of them were sold and I used "buy it now" sent the payment immediately. Two days go by and I get an email from EBay that the guys account was suspended for suspicious activity. They suggest that I take every measure to get my money back. I put a claim through paypal. According to their standards and Ebay policy and item under $500 you are only guarunteed to get back $200, but they charge you $25 to get the money back so I only got back $175. If paypal can get more money out of their account they will, but it seemed that he withdrew all of his money and the account was dry.

My biggest complaintis that it takes several weeks for the claim to go through. The seller is notified and has a chance to refute the claim or in this case. Take all of his money out of the bank and run.

I fought through ebay's dozens of computer response emails to get the guys information which turned out to be phoney. So I paid $275 to learn a lesson.

There is a way to get buyer protection through paypal, but you have to pay for it.

+1 Escrow is probably the safest bet.
