    Hi,

First post even though i have been following this community avidly for a few years.
What do you think about a getting one of the last new 458 Spyder's?
Would you rather get a recent used one?

We have been looking at a new car and deciding between the 458 Spyder and the Huracan.
My wife and i lean toward the 458 Spyder, even though it is half a generation behind the Huracan.
Our Ferrari dealership has a very well optioned 458 Spyder available, the last one they are going to get.
There is a very well optioned used one from 2013 with 9K on it and we have been debating whether we should get this one now or get a new one in a few months, with no mileage.
I would love to hear your perspective.
    Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Fred

I've just ordered my local dealers (UK) last Italia and got a decent discount of 12.5%. It is highly spec'd as well. No idea if that's something which you might be able to get in the US but gotta be worth asking surely?! It became a no brainier when the only other I liked was £45k cheaper but 3.5yrs old and someone on here mentioned that in three years it would be about to run out of its inclusive servicing etc, I imagine I'll hit £5k a year more depreciation but for a brand new unabused one I'll take that deal! Good luck with the purchase, out of interest what colour combo are you preferring

It basically depends on what you want to do. You will avoid the initial hit by buying used, but the possibility of going to Maranello to spec your car at the atelier as YOU want it, is just something very special, and it does provide the owner with an extra dimension of the ownership experience.

    It's Spider btw, not Spyder;)

Good luck with whatever you chose to do.

You can't go wrong with either but you might want to find a gently used one with 2 or 3k miles on it as 9k is a bit much compared to a new one. If you can get a 13 or 14 used in the color and with the options that you want...you'll save 30-40k over a new one. You do want as much of the 3 year warranty as possible. The cost for a year of extended warranty is around $7k which has to factored into any perceived savings over the cost of a new one.

Fred, what's your location? There are a few used ones in my area if you are interested.

If you wait long enough, I'm certain a Huracan spider will also be on the market. But that might be two years from now.

    Thanks for your help!
Schatten, i am in California, Bay Area.

Note that the options on this new model are already decided so there are not changes possible. Now, the options are all good by ys.

I bought one of the last F430 spiders in 2008. They went out of production the first quarter 2009.

I didn't mind because I knew it would be years before the 458 spider would come out. And, the last of the production is usually the best of the best. It's easy to sell or trade for the next car because you usually have a lot of warranty left.

You will lose some in depreciation. But, you will get maybe 2 years of driving enjoyment in return.

2 years is a very, very long time.

    Thanks, Mayor! It makes sense!
The only thing with a new one is that we would have to wait four months before it gets delivered. :)

Buy used. The new car effect will wear off as usual and you'll always see another car you like equally as much, or even more after you get used to it. Sure, spec'ing your own has some pros, but you'll never spec the ultimate car. You'll always see one in some color combo that looks amazing after you get used to looking at yours.

I had the same choice and decided new getting my Dealer's last 458 Spider slot to my own spec. I did secure a reasonable discount which will offset some of the depreciation but have gained on full 4 Year warranty and 7 Year servicing.

I intend to get a 488 Spider at some point and the remaining warranty/ service plan will aid resale

Only downside is I don't get the car until July - collecting it from the factory though :)

What should be your overriding concern is to find one in the color you want, that is well optioned. If you are going to spend $300k for a car, why compromise? There are so many low mileage 458 spiders for sale you should find one in your sweet spot. If you love the way they optioned the new one - fine, you will know that it hasn't been abused and will get a full warranty and lastly, put you in a better position to get higher on the dealer's list for future purchases. Either way you will be getting a great enjoyable car.

But there is NOTHING as cool as ordering and specing your own car. If you want a plane jane red/tan or all black, yes I agree. There are plenty of good used ones, some under MSRP and I'm sure you can get the dealer to give you more warranty in the deal.

But if you want something different then specing is fun and the car always feels like "your creation".

I didnt see the advantage of buying a used 458 spider. At the time ( august 2014), the used spiders were selling for over 300k. I ended up spec'ing a 2015 for 302k. I got all i wanted e.g. cf racing seats, cf racing package, cameras, etc..I ended up ordering the speciale wheels with titanium lugs ( another 8k). Didn't pay for things that weren't important to me. Plus I will be getting the full 3 yr warranty and 7 yr maintenance . Also since this will be my first F car, i got the experience of ordering my car in the "ferrari room.". It was fun and now the anticipation is over. Will be picking up my spider in 2 days! Well worth the wait!

Thanks a lot for all the advice!
We are leaning toward buying the used one.
I looked at it again today and it has been meticulously maintained.
Also, in terms of options, i don t think i would have changed a thing, besides the addition of the suspension lifter.
I will let you know the outcome soon!
    Thanks.
