Looking at a 05' F430, and when pulling away from a stop, there is sort of a buzzing sound (almost like it is quiet electronic warning sound or something, does not sound mechanical) for a few seconds...it has been suggested that the shocks are pressurizing. Is this normal, does anyone know what I am referring to, and if so is this a cause for concern? I would really appreciate your find back on this, especially technical feedback. I have struck a deal on this car, and this is the only issue outstanding before I commit tomorrow. Thanks! Car has 12,700mi., CCB, F1 tranny, pretty much full service records, has had a prior PPI, looks great, etc.

This is highly irregular. I have never heard of this problem before. My car makes no such sound.

Bigger question. Have any others you have test driven made this sound?

I don't hear anything on mine but it makes a racket with no valves. Where is the sound coming from? It's normal for the ABS pump to pressurize after starting engine, but it'd be from the front (this is clearly heard on my M3). On the rear the 430 has a hydraulic F1 (if equipped) and Ediff, which might pressurized as well. Then there's the vacuum pump/reservoir for the valves. Anyway, don't know the car enough (plus don't have F1) to tell you what is it, but doesn't sound abnormal to me based on your description.

The first step is to duplicate noise at will (a minute after start up, or whatever). Once you do that, try to isolate it with the trunk and hood open. Report back to us with a more specific location and duration, and we should be able to diagnose it better for you. I'd not buy the car until you're assured it's something normal. Good luck.

I remember on my Scuderia there was a "beeping" sound when stopped. Drove me crazy but was apparently "normal". Could it be this?

I am going to try and get over and check out the car 1 last time today. At first we thought it was the tire pressure monitoring system with an alert (those things rarely work well), well that was fixed, but the "sound" still exists. If I am not comfortable with it, I am going to send the car for a PPI at either BH Ferrari or NB Ferrari, hopefully one of those shops is still doing PPI's. On the 05' spider I test drove in Jan. I do not recall such a noise. But I had the top down vs. this coupe with the windows up, etc. Thanks guys...I will update you...

You might be hearing the F1 pump... it's noticeable more on Spiders with the top down, though. It's easy to compare because it's also the F1 pump that makes the noise when you first open the driver's door before you start the car. Might also be why blackbolt doesn't notice it because he has a 3-pedal.

My 05 makes a sound from the rear when starting out and turning sharply at the same time. But it doesn't sound like a buzz, more mechanical like the transaxle maybe. Anyway, it's done it since new with no change. Perhaps that's what you hear. Mine is a stick, so I know it's not F1 pump related.

I hear no noise of the type the OP describes with my 05 spider. This needs to be checked before deal is consummated.

As Anzir wrote, I guess this is the hydraulic pump for the F1 system. As soon as you press the fob to unlock the door the pump gets activated. Usually you park your car with first gear engaged. To start, the system first has to disengage first gear to neutral. For this (and of course for shifting all gears) the hydraulic pump is needed. If the hydraulic pump would start producing oil pressure right now you had to wait some seconds before being able to start the car. So the pump starts as soon as you unlock the door to be ready when you want to start the car.

I have a 575M F1 and you can hear the pump gentle. Before I had a Maserati GT with the F1 system (Cambiocorsa) where you could hear the pump very clearly every time I unlocked the car.

So if it is just the pump there is no reason to worry. This is a feature and not a bug.

Thanks for all the input...I went and drove the car again today, and brought a car buddy of mine as well, and he rode it in as well...I am/was hearing the F1 Pump and the solenoid (sp?) of the leveling suspension. When I drove it today, I realize it is pretty faint, and not bothersome (i had the radio off and a/c off when i first rode in the car). Service guy at a local Ferrari dealer said this is normal. My buddy said he only noticed the noise because he was specifically looking for it. I was at ease with the situation after that. I should be taking delivery Friday...Will post when I have keys and title in hand, car in garage, and pics to upload...thanks to everyone on this thread and everyone else who has provided guidance in this quest which began in Oct., and really started over 30yrs ago when I first dreamed of Ferrari ownership!
