I live in Asheville, North Carolina where there are a few exotics running around. Anyway, a couple of guys in the area drive BWM Z-8s. I have to admit, I think that car is heartbreakingly beautiful. I saw one of them out yesterday, and thought to myself, "Why doesn't Ferrari build a modern version of the 250 California Spyder, arguably one of their most beautiful creations?" I know there will be many that say, "Ferrari is all about moving forward...advancing...leave all the retro-lov'n to BMW, Ford, Jag, etc." Still, though, so many of the new Ferraris have design elements from the past. I have no problem with that. I love the shark-nose on the F430, a throwback to the 60's F-1 car. I, for one, would love to see a sexy, low-slung, well-proportioned, front-engined roadster from Ferrari (that actually looks like it was meant to be a convertible unlike the 550 Barchetta). It would be nice to have more of that beautiful design out there so that a new generation could experience it. Comments? Any Z8 owners want to share their thoughts? Thanks.

I would love to see some retro styled cars. Nothing wrong with looking to the past for ideas.

250 California Spyder and 275 NART Spyder would be at the top of my list for inspiration.

The Z8 was supposed to reflect the styling of the 508, which it does. with the surrent stylists Ferrari won't build anything as good looking as the 250 / dino / 308 etc at least until they start designing Italian cars again and get away from the Japanesse led designs (550 = Supra)

For that you'll have to go to the other side of the aisle and check out the Gallardo. All it needs are three strakes on the side vent - I think Mark Study did a photo montage of the two and it was surprising the similarities in shape.

I too love the Z8. My daily driver is an M5 which shares the drivetrain with the Z8.

Actually, I would say the Z8 shares the drivetrain with the M5,as the M5 had it first.

Testa Rossa is the silver 50's racer

    Testarossa is the 80-90s Supercar

I do agree w you that the Gallardo definately lifted the side shape off the 80s TR & freshened it

I agree that it would be cool to see an updated TR (from either era!) along with several other modern renditions of the past, but I can't help but think that that would cause some depreciation in value of the originals...? Maybe, probably at least a little, right?

Ah, my bad. Misread that. I've been wondering why they don't use the sleek shapes of the old 250's or P4 in their modern cars, with bulging fenders and a low, sleek bonnet. The 360 has a *hint* of that, and the 550 the essence of it, but nothing as dramatic and curavceous.

The rights, molds, parts, etc to the CalSpyder have recently been sold to a new owner who will start producing this high quality replica of the California Spyder. This is the updated Modena that was in the movie "Ferris Buler's Day Off". Yes, I know that it is not a real Ferrari but it doesn't cost 2 mil and you can get it with AC.

    PFlowers,

Funny you should point that out. Just the other day, I was trying to find the CalSpyder site on the web and discovered it no longer exists. Hope the new owner continues production, as I've always thought that was a nice replica. I shy away from saying that too loud though in Ferrarichat as it seems most users despise all Ferrari replicas. Definitely a pretentious group...sometimes! I own a real Ferrari, but understand there is room in the world for some high quality replicas. Strangely enough, in the aviation world (which I'm very involved in) replicas of great aircraft are admired, respected, and sought-after. Guess the car world is different. Too bad.
