I'm thinking of doing the opposite. Grafting valves onto my Capristo level 2 system so that I can turn the noise level down if needed. My brother designs/fabricates/welds race car chassis parts, headers, etc. for a living, I just need a plan. Any thoughts?

That was and may still be my plan....

You'll find that the majority of your Capristo noise is generated from the inner pipes/tips. I made covers/plugs and tested it. My first "cover" was 5 layers of tin-foil which blew-out like pinata'-stuffing....my 2nd version was sheet metal caps, they stayed on. The drone noise was reduced about 80% and the overall noise about 40%. If you take your stock 360 exhaust you'll notice is has bypass valves that fit on a 2" pipe: you can take these valves and have them "grafted" onto your inner pipes on the Capristo. There is room for these bypass valves if they are put on horizontally and facing the rear of the car.

My dealer did this for me on my F430 the day I took delivery, they say it only makes it louder and have not seen any ill effects from doing it.

About this mod. is once you have the collars on they are easily adjustable ( with the exhaust cold of course) so you can make the car sound however you like

I consider my stock F430 loud enough and she for sure catches enough attention. Why do you guys need a louder car, to grab extra attention!!

    Tarek,

First off....LOVE the avatar, please send me a bigger pic [email protected]

Secondly, this doesn't make the car louder overall....it just makes it adjustably louder at the bottom-end, sparing you from having it too loud if you entirely disconnect the bypass valves altogether.

Thanks for posting this great, inexpensive Mod. I am a new 360 owner and was showing off the car to friends and had the engine just started. I noticed that the exhaust vapor was only coming out of two pipes. While under the car and with the wheel well covers off I saw the valves and was thinking how to change the setting. A search of the forum pulled up your post. Great Forum, gerat Mod!!! I just did this yesterday, took all of twenty minutes to do. The new sound is wonderful.

    Very pleased!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That actuator is vaccum operated, if i am not mistaking. There are other ways of controling that. Being that it is the same principle as a turbo waste gate actuator, a cheap valve on the vac line will do the trick as well.

The cost of the collers from my local hobby shop was less than $2.00. Cost of drilling inside dia. to proper size - $0.00, time to do - 20 minutes, satisfaction - priceless!!!

Actually Horya has a point - and its not cost.

If you used an electronic boost controller you could have a simple 3 way manetto style switch in the cabin to adjust the sound level at the press of a button. Coming home late at night and don't want to disturb the peace? Quiet mode, on the open road, loud mode. etc. Ferrari should do this on the next production car. Would be a nice feature...

Or if you want to do it on the cheap use fish tank valves.
Trev how is your car coming along?

Pinching the hoses tends to give you an engine dummy light on the dash. This doesn't happen when you hold it partially open?

Great mod looks nice and straight forward enough for that perfect tunable sound and without any draw backs that i can think of
I have not had chance to do it yet .. but i was wondering would there be sufficient adjustment on the threaded arm to allow partial opening when valve when in vacuum mode closed..

I just tried to unscrew the end from the shaft but the shaft rotated along w/ the end and the space is so cramped that I couldn't find anything to hold the shaft while I turn the end. Can someone give me a tip on a better way to unscrew the end?
Also, would by screwing the end in more achieve the same result as putting in the collar?

Wow...I posted this all over a year ago and it still get revived every now and then. At this point, I can only try to answer your question. I don't think the adjustment on the bypass valve's threaded shaft really does anything as far as partially opening or closing the valve...at least as I recall. What play there is doesn't allow for any real regulation of the opening/closing of the valve itself.

Guys...I also have to report: the lock-collars can easily become loose over time so you may want to use a threaded bolt so you can more easily access and torque-down the setting!!!!! Pull out the little hex-bolt and replace it with a longer bolt....that'll save some time!

It's also a very small window of adjustment...you'll have to play with it to find a point where the valve is open enough (at low rpm) to let SOME of the sound through but not ALL of it....find that mid-point and then lock it down tight.

The other problem is that you don't have a large window of time to make adjustments before the exhaust system gets too hot to handle. Best of luck - Steve

+1 on the revival. I was going to do your mod to adjust the sound, and then decided to just unplug the electrical connector as described here:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111985&highlight=exhaust+switch

5 minutes later, and my 360 finally sounds mean at low RPM's. Not sure why anyone wouldn't want to have the full glory of all 4 pipes open. Before anyone tries Steve's adjustment mod (which I'm sure is great), do yourself a favor and just disconnect the plugs. You might find you like the sound as well as I did.

I do have to admit... one of the reasons I simply unplugged it is because I have a regular 360, where the valve is hard to get to in order to do the adjustment mod :) Easy to unclip, though!

on a stradale when you disconnect the vacuum lines the car sounds like a tug boat when it idles IMHO.

Is there an easy way to keep the valves CLOSED to make the car more quiet? Laguna Seca has a sound limit so I'm trying to make my CS more quiet for track days.
