Looking for some advice from the brain trust here. Failed CA emissions with a slightly high HC at the 25 mph test. This was the only abnormal value. Max is 32 and car was 36 or 38. Last test 2 years ago was in the single digits. I haven’t driven the car for a few weeks and just drove it about 25 mins to the smog test place. It does not sit on a tender. Wondering if it just needs to be driven hard for an Italian tune up and try and again? Unfortunately my Foxwell OBD2 reader doesn’t read on this car.

My understanding of higher HC is a too rich condition which of course could be a lot of things. Easier things could be a weak battery from not being on a tender (though car starts right up) or I could check the plugs?

    Thoughts appreciated. Thank you.

High HC does not indicate too rich, it indicates too much unburned fuel. Can be for a lot of reasons. 1st I'd try is make a deal with guy doing test to check the minute you drive in then take it for 1/2 hour of good hard driving so everything is good and hot. Don't shut it off, just drive right in for test.

    That may help.

Pass or not, best thing you can do is get out of California. I did. Best choice I ever made.

Haha, I wish I could get out of CA, just too much invested here to pickup and go.

I'll try your suggestion. I figure with the barley high level it might be something like that worth trying. Thanks.

It is close and when new no big issue but the state has obviously lowered the numbers substantially. As I recall it used to be 100PPM or so.
Those are awfully low numbers for a 15 year old car to pass. Its very clear California wants gas burners out of the state.

California has for some time been requiring older cars to run cleaner than they did to homologate them when brand new.

In 2013 max HC in CA according to my test was 84 @ 15 mph, 49 @ 25 mph for a 95 F355. Thankfully the car is not longer in CA.

That’s dumb. So many more polluters than classic cars.

haha, yeah, but TEXAS!? haha, big no thanks on that one. :) Although you do have a spectacular race track in your back yard. :)

No emissions testing anymore in Washington (and it previous cut off at 25 years anyway.)

They have the power to fix this stuff with citizen Initiatives. I'm surprised they haven't yet.

With 20% of the state backing it? Good luck.

So you want to exempt classic cars? And how many of the state legislators will be in front of a TV camera the next day screaming its a law to let rich people off the hook and let them pollute?

Washington got rid of emissions testing altogether because the cost of the program outweighed the number of failing vehicles. Classics were exempt anyway.

Absolutely absurd that a 1976 Fiat X1/9 needs the smog pump and crappy cat fitted as factory in California.

    But, we all digress.

My issue with Texas — I have a few, honestly — but ferrari-wise it’s the lack of corners.

A lot of things are that way, especially in California. But Sacramento collectively has been getting reelected based on things like keeping polar bears alive because they have convinced the brain dead 60% of the states voting population that is a holy cause preventing the Pacific Ocean from covering over the state.

After 59 years it was making my head explode so I moved to a reality based society. I no longer have 8 licenses with 6 annual fees and 5 annual inspections and traded it for one free license.

...and the frontage roads, the toll roads, the attitudes, the power grid, the weather, etc. :)

haha. But again, I suppose we should get back on topic here. :)

Agree. This thread won’t go anywhere productive. I still think the answer is Montana plates.

Music to my ears. We are soon to be no longer CA residents. Cannot wait to live in a free (red) state.

I've seen those states have a lot of stupid rules too. Don't blindly equate "red" with "free".

BJ: the distain for inches you expressed in the other thread — George Washington’s preferred unit of measure — tells us all we need to know about you. ;)
