I am knee deep into a suspension rebuild and now have to make a decision on the finish of the suspension arms. The original finish is a yellow cad plate but paint or powder coat are acceptable finishes as far as corrosion protection is concerned. The cad plate is a finish that may become extinct due to environmental regulations and I do not expect to have these pieces off the car ever again as the finish should easily last the life of me/ the car. Here's my question: what would you choose?
I should make this a poll
    A) spray bomb the pieces for $20 plus a few hours of labor in the garage.
    B) powder coat black for about $200
    C) cad plate for $1000
    D) how can you even ask this question? It's a Ferrari.

$1000 seems nutty to me for cosmetics on the suspension. Will anyone talk me off the ledge?

I gave up trying to find places locally to do cad/zinc plating.

Went to harbor freight and bought a powdecoating gun, and got some gold powdercoat from east wood.

I have one this on lots of small parts after sandblasting, and they look fine.

Does it look like cad? No.

    Does it look ok? Yes.

There are lost of powdercoats out there that look like flat zinc/stainless, etc, that are quite passable in an engine compartment...

The best color is high gloss black - THAT looks phenomenal in powdercoat! Cheap too.

Spray bombs won't work. It will rust through in a month.

    :D LOL :D
I don't know the condition of your car or how much you drive/what kind of weather you put it through but I always drool when I see an old F-car with brand new looking suspension components. Yeah, I know, it's under there where no one can see it :(
I don't know how well powder coat will hold up to all the s**t kicked around under the car either. There appears to be a ton of coating co's. out there, aircraft are always in need of these services. If you get a good co. who does top notch aircraft coating, I'd think it would last the time you own the car & still look good when you unload it. $250./wheel is no picnic,...but hey, it's less than 1/2 of what new TRX's are :D

We should weigh all decisions relative to the cost of TRX's and SR's coolant hose kits...Any other opinions?

Cadmium plating is no longer available as I understand it. Zinc Dichromate is the alternative and looks pretty much the same. $1000 seem very steep, I have used this outfit BrakeBoosters.com with good success to do many parts on my restorations including buckets of bolts and nuts. They wire everything (vs tumble) and results as really good.

Its definitely available - I visited two shops near Boston that offer it - but it is being phased out. I sent a note to the brakeboosters guy to check prices.

Yeah, yellow zinc is common---should be no more than $200 or $300...Cannot see the difference between cadmium and yellow zinc dichromate...

Brake Booster's Zinc Dichromate appears to be an exact match to Yellow Cadmium from what I can see via web pages.

Thanks for the info. A somewhat local shop can do zinc for about $225, depending on the condition of parts. I have two more quotes out for zinc and hope to wrap this up soon.
