Image Unavailable, Please Login Hi, my 2012 458 Spider needs the smog check and I couldn’t get the CAT to be ready. I have swapped the stock cat in and the shop told me to drive the car 100-200 miles before the smog. I’ve put 250 miles in past week and the CAT is still not ready. Anyone has experience with this? Thank you in advance.

Why is it giving an evap notice? Make sure the gas cap is tight.

Usually if you google, you can find the sequence of things you have to do to get the car ready. It's stuff like driving and putting the windows up and down, etc, etc. from what I understand. I'd also check to make sure the wiring harnesses from the O2 sensors are okay.

Also, have you checked to see if there are any old codes that need to be cleared?

Thank you Ray for replying. There is no coded or any pending code at all. I don’t know what you mean by gas cap if you mean the exterior color gas cap yeah it is tightly perfect and O2 sensor is fine. I swapped out the aftermarket test pipe and stock CAT in. I also have retuned the ECU back to stock to get ready for smog. I’ve been driving 250 miles on fwy and street combined. Drove it hard and cruising around. Still can’t get the CAT ready.

Usually there is some odd sequence of events you have to do, like put the windows up and down, open the passenger door. Go into reverse, turn on the A/C, open the trunk. I don't know what it consists of for the Ferrari, but I have read about it online for other cars.

Evap relates to the system which sucks gas fumes out of the exhaust tank and the charcoal canister - you might try opening the gas cap and closing it and/or refueling to see if that checks off the evap thing.

Okay I will do everything above and see the cat is ready. I think CA DMV allows EVAP to remain Not Ready and will not cause a smog test failure. Now I have only one monitor is CAT to complete.

Twice now I've had to get a car through CA emissions testings right after putting a new battery in that cleared any previous tests. I've been told that none of the tests run if there is too much or too little fuel in the car. Once I started doing the recommended drive cycles with about 3/4 of a tank they passed pretty quickly.

And I believe you are correct about EVAP:

The new Emission Monitor Requirement criteria is as follows:

    - 2000 and newer model year gasoline powered vehicles will need all emission monitors in READY or COMPLETE status, with the exception of the EVAP monitor. An incomplete evaporative monitor will not cause a smog check failure. It will be the only monitor allowed to be incomplete on a 2000 & newer gasoline powered vehicle.

Ones you’ve swapped the cat . You might need to reset the adaptation. Just unplug the battery and start everything over

I tried lots of combos on my 430–

a steady 60 mph on Interstate 5 for 15 miles and shut it down 5 mins and repeated twice more cleared mine with same handheld device— I went straight to shop and passed.

Ive done the steady state thing and it worked. I think its also important to not rev the car beyond 4k rpm and drive in the highest gear possible for 15-20 miles. I only did it once and it cleared. Ive heard from others that it can take a lot more miles or a couple of miles at operating temp.

I would also put an OBD2 reader on and see if you can verify the signals coming from the O2 sensors are correct.

go to Karl @ Black Horse, he can lift the car up and do the entire drive cycle. Even at 2:00 am, it's very hard to complete

Just smogged my 2013 458 today and thought I would share the experience and what I learned. I drove the car straight from my garage to the test center that was about 5 miles away. Hooked it up and did not pass the emissions control systems OBD2 test. Tech told me to drive the car for about 15 minutes and get the cats warmed up. I drove around going between 55-85 mph. Came back and hooked it up, car did not pass. He then recommended going a steady state of 60 mph for about 15 minutes. Did that and came back for a retest and finally passed. Based upon recommendations above, you need to do the steady state.

Here is a copy of what did not pass. My 458 has a stock exhaust with a valve controller.

Was there a recent battery disconnect? If not recent, how long since last disconnect? I’m trying to understand why the monitors weren’t ready.

I have not had a new battery replaced/disconnected for the last year. Always on a tender and always fires right up. I’m with you, don’t know why the monitors were not ready. Also, I did a long drive last weekend.
