I looked at a 512 BB yesterday that has a Ca. Certification tag riveted to the driver's door jam. The car will not smog without the addition of a "super-dupper" catayltic which the owner says "may over heat the paint and cause damage". Evidently, the car is operated with 1 day permits on an irregular basis. Are there options for registering (with current tags) a car like this?
My understanding of California Vehicle Law is: the seller must have the car smog certified to enact a transfer of title. In the end, if the car cannot be driven, then what good is it?
I was thinking a 512 would be a better investment than buying new but......

The car needs a Bureau of Automotive Repair sticker, commonly called a BAR sticker.
You'll also needs Cats to pass the test, but I don't know of any 'Super Duper' requirement.

Correct on the seller being required to complete a smog test prior to the sale.
Unless your buying a really good car for a really good price, why not just buy a great car that is already registered in CA, and has a history of passing the smog tests..... like Mine!

Well, basically it's been registered in Ca since new, so has had to pass the tests to maintain the registeration. As well I have printouts of some of the test results showing it passed plus the DNV registeration copies back to about 1988.

Injected cars can be set to pass any emission test even with out cats which shows how efficient the dual K jetronic really is.

One could change the mixture at idle way below one percent and back to 1.5 in minutes if they know how with a co meter and alan for the fuel distributors ,a screw driver,a homemade proper mercury gauge, and a little wrench for the tiny little nuts that loosen up the little shafts that control the throttle on both banks.

An x California injected car could also have cats in place of mufflers with a custom exhaust and even replace them for mufflers of the same length for a change of sound and or performance at any time or as many times if bolt on set.

A great machinist and header builder can do so for a fraction of the cost of any exhaust made for the BB for better sound and performance with out any birds singing out of your pipes.....but this is a subject for another post.
