First let me say that I am British so please indulge this question if the answer is all too obvious.

In exploring the history of my F430 on FChat I saw a post that mentioned CA Emission Test results were available online - just plug in your VIN. I did so and to my surprise up popped a record for my car passing the test in CA. I was surprised because my car has never been titled or registered in CA. Obviously the car could have been driven there - but why would it be subject to an emissions test?

To confuse matters further (at least for a Brit) I then found an old thread on FChat that suggested an F430 could not be registered by a Colorado resident in an area that required an emissions test? Why? Would any F430 fail an emissions test in Colorado?

    Thanks

Good question and the answer is not obvious, to me anyway.

I did some searching and I assume you mean this site:

    https://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/Vehicle/PubTstQry.aspx

It is the California Bureau of Automotive Repair; evidently CARB requires them to keep records. Does not explain why your car showed up there.

I would guess the exhaust was changed and catalytic converters deleted. With the manifold problems 430s have I imagine it's pretty common because a lot of owners go aftermarket.

Thanks for those observations. Even if the exhausts (manifold / headers) were changed and catalytic converters deleted, that would still not explain why the car was emission tested in CA?

If the catalytic converters were deleted surely the car would fail an emissions test (it passed)?

Yes - that’s where I found the record. As you say, it does not explain why the car was tested in CA.

In the Peoples’s Republic of California we know all, see all, and most of all, tell all of the rest of the world what to think and do. So why shouldn’t foreign cars be subject to our smog inspections and tests? We are clearly better than you (after all we caught Volkswagen for smog cheating and our smog requirements are clearly better than the EPA’s) and we are only doing it to save the planet.

    Peace and love.

One possibility is that the car was registered in a state that requires emissions but was physically in California.
Some states will accept an out of state smog test if you accompany it with a form saying how the car is “temporarily” out of state at the time emissions testing is required.

I'm only replying to the second part of your question about the CO car that can't be registered in CA, rather than your specific car.

A clue may lie in when it was tested in California. Do you have the date and when the car came to the US?

The car was brought to the US in 2008 but was tested in CA in 2016, so it seems to have nothing to do with import regulations. The car was both titled and registered in Florida.
