"Using $503,000 in federal and state gas tax revenue to pay for overtime, nine police agencies in Riverside, California sent more than one hundred police officers to surround a gathering of automotive enthusiasts. Owners of imported sport compact cars had gathered at the Canyon Crossing shopping center on Friday night to swap stories, talk about their passion for cars and show off the latest enhancements to their rides. At around 11pm police surprised participants by blocking all exits with fifty police cruisers. Officers then began a warrantless search and interrogation operation of the 150 vehicles that were present."

"Police issued a total of forty-eight tickets for "engine modifications" with police accusing the owners of the parked vehicles of being street racers. Another fifty tickets were issued for paperwork violations, dark window tinting and lack of a front license plate. The most revenue, however, will be generated from the fees imposed on twenty vehicles that were confiscated. Despite labeling the parking lot raid as taking place at a "street racing venue," Riverside Police offered no evidence that any street racing actually took place."

Somehow they've succeeded in making customized cars into contraband that can be seized and publicly crushed.

Your mayor Loveridge in Riverside is a Longshoreman first, a Democrat second, and a hater of all things that emit gasses.

...but, if the kids had invited Longshoremen to put up a union display at their event, you would have had no raid, and no cars would have been confiscated.

Gotta pay your protection money one way or the other in Riverside...

A town near me in IL sponsored a car show a few years back. They promoted it and it was a big event for the town and attracted lots of people, all who spent lots of money on food, drinks, etc. Well, the police showed up and ticketed every car without a front license plate. Needless to say, the event did not repeat the following years, and in IL all you have to do it put the plate on, take a picture of it and go to court. They dismiss the fine. Net revenue? Not much. I imagine the Mayor had a tough time getting re-elected after that.

Oh, and for you political spinners, this was a completely Republican district.

98 tickets into $503,000 is $5,132.65 per ticket to break even. I doubt if the tickets were that high. so it looks like harassment pure and simple as the gov't lost a bunch of taxpayer money on this operation.

I am sure the police enjoyed the overtime pay at taxpayer expense.

more gov't by the gov't, for the gov't and of the gov't. I just threw up in my mouth...again.

I had an encounter with some officers here in Florida because I was in my lamborghini hanging out in a parking lot with a lot of car people. There were imports, european and American muscle cars, but I was the only exotic. They asked how come a rich guy was hanging out with that crowd, where was I from, my ethnic background, what was my first language, what did I do for a living, how long have I reside in the USA, how come my family moved from Europe to Cuba and then here, how come I'm parked in a handicap space with a permit of course but I don't look the part, how come you are handicap but can street race and be standing and talking for over an hour...
To make things more interesting the police were one southern accent guy, a black, a Hindu and a mexican!

That Mayor must be a complete AH

I just mapquested Riverside, thats one place I am never going

I have FL plates on my car, have not had any issues w LAPD and I hope to keep it that way

btw Cops do not need warrants to search your car.

If they want to they can ask your permission, NEVER say yes

If they want to they can then get a warrant and burn up hours of your time by the highway

or they can just impound your car & search it at will there

The Houston Police raided a big parking lot 'event 'in much the same way a few years back...

The lawyers will have a field day with this.......here most of the cases were tossed out, and quite a few in the PD lost jobs over it..

It will depend on lots of variables, but here the argument went that those in the citations were mixed with actual customers of legitimate adjacent businesses...Whataburger, Target stores....folks argued they were on legitimate business and were caught up in the sting..

There has a lso been incidents here as one poster noted where they target an auto show with the Front Plate violations, those usually stick, though. I have hung all mine to avoid the hassle.

Not necessarily. As I have posted before, a few years ago Clean-Air Enforcement Officers showed up at an Atlanta area car show and arrested the owners and confiscated a few vehicles that had their emissions equipment (including cats) removed. That's why I have posted many times that it is not smart to post on FChat about how you just removed the cats and installed 'test pipes' on your Ferrari. It will only get worse my friends. After all, big brother has internet access too!

Take note, that other than the California Highway Patrol, all of the police agencies were small town cops. No L.A. County Sherrif and no LAPD. We have a large exotic car gathering of Ferraris, Porsches, Astons, Lambos, etc. at Mullhulland in Woodland Hills the last Sunday of every month. The LAPD routinely cruise with us and check out the cars just like one of us. They mingle with the crowd and generally enjoy themselves.

It would be nice if they would do the same thing and instead of raiding a car gathering, round up the millions of illegals in this country.

Hu-oh, did I just make this a political discussion???? :D

Why can't they just get into Street Gangs and sell Crack like all the other kids,,
instead of wasting their time learning about Motors and electronics and such.
I wouldn't want any of Those Kids installing my new GPS-Nav system,, heck no...!
They probably only have, like, 8 years experiance..!
