Yeah this is the m.o. of just about all the exotic makers these days. I recall Stephan Winkelmann, head of Lambo, saying at the Geneva show that the company has received a 100 orders already of its new LP670 SV. I'm sure all 100 "owners" will be very happy about their mandatory surprise deliveries.

Having worked in the automotive industry for 10 years, I can tell you that "sold out" almost always means that they have been wholesaled to dealers, not retailed to(or ordered by)an individual. 2009 ZR1s were sold out, yet they are readily available at dealers today. Very few exceptions (like the Enzo) are sold out to the customer immediately. Just recently GM was bragging about the thousands of ordered that they had for the new Camaro. Their dealers probaby only have a handful of actual names to go with those cars. Everything from a Prius to an exotic can be found at at least one dealer nationwide even when there are "waiting lists". In remote places there is often no markup either.

Just had a conversation with someone in the market for a California. He said his dealer told him that their list is full for at least two years but if he paid 100k over sticker he could go to the top of the list. He passed because he doesn't believe in paying over sticker. My kind of guy! He's going to get something else because he doesn't want to wait for one for two years. He told the dealer that too.

My take on this is that there must be pretty strong demand. Otherwise would the dealer have the guts to turn away a buyer especially if they were having problems getting buyers.

I suspect the dealer was just fishing for a bite.

I think a $20K NON refundable deposit is pretty ballsy in this day and time.

But very useful for cash flow ... which I suspect is what such requests are all about. I've heard that deposits requested by one dealer were used to refund deposits made by other customers.

There are all sorts of games going on with the Dealers and the Cali, here's one I tried successfully but later backed out of the deal.

Tell your Dealer that you are willing to put up, in excrow, for a custom Cali, near to or the entire purchase price. Subject to several terms and conditions, one being that he can shove his list, you want to be guaranteed to be in his first X number of cars. Where X= this year delivery and/or his first allotment (as you may choose).

Since we hear about August deliveries, now being April, you are tying up funds for 4-5 months and either your money goes into an interest bearing account or you get the loss of money as a discount to MSRP. I tell you, there was some gnashing of teeth and consternation at the Dealership that day :0)

They said "No" to the interest bearing, then "No" to the discount, I pulled my paperwork and walked. They are now calling back but I have moved on to a used 430S.

There were several more T and Cs that were met but the long-short is simple. If you are a Buyer, act like one, you're going to pay for the car in a few months anyway (assuming you have cash or equivalent). The Dealer then needs to step up to the plate and show his real hand, that you forced with your cash-up-front proposal.

    Fair is fair.
