    Hey guys,

As part of my restoration I took off my brake calipers for a full overhaul, but I made a rookie mistake and forgot to mark which bolt (and shims) goes to which caliper during disassembly. Here’s what I know:
    • I had two shims on each bolt when I removed them, and those are still on the correct bolts.
    • Based on the bolt lengths, I believe the longer bolts are for the front calipers to account for the brake plate shield's thickness. So, I think I’ve figured out which shims go to the front and which to the back, however don't know of which side (easy to figure out 50% odds).
However, as I try to align the calipers, I noticed something odd—on one side of the caliper, the gap between the rotor and caliper is much tighter than on the other side. Is this uneven gap normal when reinstalling calipers? Or is it a sign that I need to recheck my shimming to make sure everything is aligned properly?

See the red difference. From what I understand this gap needs to be equal on both sides.

Any advice on whether this is normal or how to better align the calipers would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

I think it will be impossible to insert 1 of the 2 new brake pads

Not normal. Move shims. The purpose of using shims is to end up with the rotors centralized in the calipers when it's all tight.

And would add if you can't get the rotor centralized, you may not have the rotor fully seated on the hub. Also, a quick check of rotor runout right now is not a bad idea.

It appears as though it has too many shims but not sure due to the photo.

Working in the dealer when they were brand new cars I took off many calipers that had never been touched before and without exception they were all shimmed the same with one thin and one thicker shim under each mounting point. Exact centering isn't crucial but those look like they have a stack of shims under them or a large flat washer.
