did some investigations and it seems the engine is "stuck" as the exhaust camshaft 5/8 has shifted some tooth...
saw already at least one bend exhaust valve (but these sodium ones have to leave anyway)
Seems like the "stuck" engine wil not turn out to be a money pit after all.
It rotated freely, all pistons move only to be bocked by i timing fault induced valve

In the mean time pulled the engine, took some pictures and got a deja vu....

first picture: the carbed 308 engine
second one (and therefore the deja vu) my detailed 328 in februari this year.

What an exciting time, and a great looking car. Makes me look forward to the first time I get to pull the engine out of my Mondial. Sadly I don't have a proper space for it right now. I don't know anything about your exhaust, but the more I look at it the more I like it, looks custom, but again don't know anything about it.

    Congratulations on the purchase.

Toss that exhaust immediately! It's just a cheaply-done set up with "Cherry-Bomb" looking mufflers that one would THINK are efficient but are decidedly not. When we used to dyno test mufflers - which we did on a routine basis - Cherry Bombs would inevitably show less power than an oem muffler in good condition. But the CBs were LOUD so the owners always swore they made more power than the stock mufflers they had removed. But unless the stock muffler was rotted out and internally damaged, the opposite was the case...

pulled the fronthead yesterday. Left it hanging one night with loosened nuts with the weight of the entire engine as ballast. This morning after some gentle knokking on the head the head parted from the block. ( after reading some horror stories here on this matter: to my great relief...)

What i found was pretty unbelievable, ALL exhaustvalves (sodiumfilled) were broken! three disks were forced into the seats, however roteted 90 degr, one just laughted at me from the top of a piston.

Well this will mean some extra work i guess..

The other cilinderhead is "hanging" now.

    will post some pictures tomorrow

    Steven,

Sounds like a fun project for someone with the right attitude! Nothing that a tig welder and some fresh parts won't fix. Good luck to you!

    Regards,

    Art S.

PS. I look forward to seeing the pictures.

I do some of the work on my 308, but I lack the technical expertise and the garage space to do anything really involved.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for anyone who, instead of having to buy the lowest mileage, best-kept car with full service records that he can find, chooses instead to buy a Ferrari that needs some attention, and puts in the time and work necessary to get it back into shape.

Stupid? Not by a long shot! Highly admirable? Yes, indeed. :)

thanx for all the support although i'm still not so sure about the not-being-stupid part:):)

anyway did some work on the engine.

both heads are off now and the one with the four broken exhaustvalves is completely stripped.
try to do the other one this week also and than i will have both head to some engineshop for new seats, guides and exhaustvalves. (not sure about in inlet ones)

All advise on were to buy the parts is welcome! (superperformance seems to be the shop to go too i guess but maybe there are more shop to considder)

    some pictures
    1: ever saw that before?
    2: 4 times broken!
    3: one ready for shipment
4: thanks for the credit on taking this labor of love project but i must admit, my first two were bought in almost perfect shape. As working on these cars turned out to be as exciting as driving them i decided to buy this third one. So there is indeed "some" work involved..

Looks like you've got some work ahead of you. Please post some pictures of what the pistons look like. Damaged pistons make great conversation pieces.

Heartwarming thread here. Somebody's got to do it. The First Law of Aviation is, everything always takes longer than you think. The Second Law of Aviation is, everything always costs more than you think. This goes quadruple for antiques and warbirds. Hope classic Ferraris are not like that.

Remember I decided to renew all exhaustvalves already. Just yesterday i decided to buy new inletvalves as well. Although there are not sodiumfilled, they are 31 years old too so a fatigue crack could spoil my rebuild engine soon or later. Better be safe than sorry I guess.

Next week all valves will be here and as both heads are stripped down already 0i can sent all stuff to the shop.
Heads will have new valves, new valveguide & seals, reworked valveseats and the heads will be flattened (is that English?)

Meanwhile pulled the belhousing (what a pain in the a** the remove a splitring on the gearboxshaft!) and inspected the dropgears. They are looking oke!

    anyway I'll keep you posted!!

about the engine. All valves are in now so i'll bring both heads to the shop for rebuild.

After sending rifledriver a question his aswer got me thinking. Subject pistons.... and his advice to change them all as there are no good anyway)

However as my first goal is to get the car roadworthy I decided to buy only one now piston to replace the one damaged and keep the rest as is. ( i will weight out the one of course)

Start on the suspension now, left rear corner. Everything is surprisingly good shaped. The bushing looks pretty worn but is good enough for legal testing and i will replace them for nylon anyway so for now i leave them as is. Only bought new bushings for the shocks
The shocks themselfes (koni d special) are both in good shape too. also no cracked or torn rubber boots on the driveshafts. The breaks however is another story. have te renow all rubberparts and hoses.

Anyway, after a long days work this corner is done only waiting for the parts to arrive.

    some before and after pictures

    super performance!

when ordering some stuff for my 308 i noticed several days after delivery that i missed one inletvalve.

I confronted them with this this was their reaction:

    Hi Steven

Apologies for the missing valve. It will leave today on an express carrier.

    With kindest regards
    Ita

So, no discussions whatsoever. That's what i would call service!

as the cilinderheads are at the shop i finally found some time to work on the car this weekend.

Finished the backside first and than moved to the front. I had quite some trouble getting the front calipers pistons out as the system was drained already. Contrary to the ones on the rear there is nothing in the front calipers to push out the pistons. Compressed air did not do the trick either and as i do not have a greasegun i decided to try rotating the pistons a tiny bit to allow some rustbreaker to get in. This worked.
It took a few hours all together but in the end compressed air did the trick.

On the suspension, after some hours of stripping and painting i couls put all parts back.
again, as al;l th bushings will be replaced for racingtype material i did not work on trhem now.

another before and after pic is attached.

only the left front end to go and than i will start working on the electricity. Will be fun i guess :(:(

Congratulations! It is so nice to see the photos of before and after. The old rusty component and then to see the new clean and painted parts. Just beautiful! I really admire what you are doing and saving a classic car.

Stupid? We lost $300K on our house. We lost over $32K on our Ford Expedition. We lost $21K on our GMC Jimmy. We lost money on investments. We lost more money the last few years than we can add up.

I haven't lost a dime on the 308 though. It may not have appreciated any, but it sure hasn't lost any value either. And if the dollar deflates, well, just sayin. There are a lot dumber things to own/buy.

thanx and i will show more any time i have some

i know, i've read the thread....

....and still some peope say owning a 3x8 is a bad investment..
Well, at least my cars pay me dividend every drive. (endless smiles on my face and lots of fun)

    anyway,
the weekend i will do the last corners suspension-wise. Than I received the message yesterday that my cilinderheads are ready.

Flattened, new in- and outletvalves, guides and seats. So after i finshed my suspension job i will continue with the engine again.
    Some pictures will follow.
