    This is funny. About a week ago i found out about this service called covert call ( http://www.covertcall.com/ ). You can make your number appear to be anyone elses. You can even show '2' or '911' on the person you are callings caller id. Funniest part is that you can go to phonenumber.com and find weird names like Gaylord Focker and call people with that. It is really amusing. Anyone have an idea if this is illegal in anyway? I can see the whole 911 stuff being illegal, but in general. Several people said there is no law against it yet, but i just wanted to see what everyone here thought.

    I am sure it is illegal since you are impersonating someone else, but I am not a lawyer, someone with legal background can probably be more specific why it is or is not illegal.

    my understanding is that there are crisp FTC rules about marketers spoofing CID (very non-kosher).

    however, my understanding is that htere are no super-crisp laws about such behavior not involving marketing activities.

    what i have been led to believe is that it is generally problematic to pretend you're someone you are not on CID. so if you buzz your bud with Bob Smith's phone number that's an issue (though i'm not sure what law is being violated exactly). if you buzz your bud with a joke CID "Hugh Jass 666/666-6666" i'm not sure that violates any laws per se (but i could be wrong).

    there are a few companies offering such services to the PI market and Collections market - where such spoofing is apparently within the legal realm (the collections guy calls you with your mother's CID to get you to answer and then berates you for money).

    CID as an identifying technology will die at some point unless everyone gets legislated into compliance (and even still).

    o my bad. i had copied the url in my control panel and sent it to my friend in aim as i was posting it and just pressed ctrl-v in the post.

    edit: and btw i didn't make anything off of it. I seriously was pre-occupied and didn't even realize it. I just wanted to see if there are any people around that knew the legalities that go along with this.

    edit 2: sorry about that. i just saw the post with the referrers. and thanks doody for answering my question regardless of that mistake.

    I don't think the kid is affiliated with the site. From the forum there, he seems to just use the site's product to make prank phone calls.
