in a couple weeks to visit the little lady. I will be staying right in Manhattan. Just was curious on things yall would recommend to see. Any events going on through the 19th-26th aug? She will be working a lot so I will have a lot of free time to myself. So far I have the letterman show lined up(been a big fan), and I want to explore WallStreet and some of the big name companies in the area. I am big on History though and any thing car related so some ideas on cool museums would be great too. I wont have a car so stuff within the city would be preferable. I will be a regular up there every few months so I am really looking forward to just about everything NYC has to offer.

Thanks for any and all help,
    Ryan S.

It's not in the City, but it's about 40 minutes away. In Syosset NY on the 22 there is going to be a huge car rally. Seems like its been an amazing event before, so I'm checking it out. May be of interest of you.

Times Square, Central Park, Broadway, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Empire State Building, Madam Toussauds Wax Museum, Ripleys Believe It Or Not, Yankee Stadium, Planet Hollywood, Ferrari Store, Staten Island Ferry ride (Statue of Liberty),
Ground Zero, Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy and lots more.

I was there in May and also attended a Letterman Show - fantastic experience. Micky Roarke was one of Letterman's guests on the day.

    I love NYC.

You'll probably want a reservation for Planet Hollywood though. Esp. if it's a weekend. It's right in Time Square and it's usually packed. If you wanna see some cool movie items, check it out.

Even if you live in NYC you would not ever have enough free time to consider going to Planet Hollywood. Going there as a visitor to NYC is a crime.

Haven't been back since it returned to its pier but still should be worth your time. The Metropolitian Museum of Art is also well worth the $20 adult donation. Just walking along Central Park is awesome! There's a Ferrari F-1 car mounted to a wall in one of the Museum of Modern Art's satellite buildings.

Planet Hollywood does not have anything really "special" about their food. But there is a place called Pop Burger at 60 9th Ave. with these mini burgers that are very good. They're small so get a few but worth trying it out.

I hade a meal there in May this year and it was one of the best meals I had on my visit to the USA., and I ate everywhere while criss-crossing the country. The steak I had there was up there with the best. It nearly topped the steak meal I had at the Hard Rock Cafe in Beale Street, Memphis TN.

most likely because its a touristy chain vs a real steakhouse. ruth's chris, peter lugers, old homestead, probably would have blown your mind if you enjoyed planet hollywood. although its all relative. i have family members that dont go out much, and they think that macaroni grill is great italian. not that there is anything wrong with planet hollywood. but most people in the area wouldnt recommend it because its not a NYish thing to do

This thread shows the different tastes of different people. That's why it's so subjective to recomend restaurants. If anyone does a search for what to do in NYC and stumbles across this thread, do yourself a big favor and visit Zagats website. For those not familiar with Zagats, it started as a book and ratings for just about every restaurant in NYC is in it.
What makes Zagats unique is that the ratings and comments are not by food critics, but by the people who have actually dined there. Ratings are for food, service, price, etc. They are online but the book, which can be bought at any bookstore and most candy stores is much easier to use. It's the restaurant bible in NYC. Once you pick your restaurant(s) you can go to a site , Open Table, check out the menu and make a reservation online.

most of the things you said are spot on, but this one is especially true... discussing pizza in new york is like discussing religion in the rest of the country....

If you want a great dinner, try The Palm on 50th between 8th and Broadway. Not as pricey as Ruth's Chris or Peter Luger, but outstanding steaks and seafood. The bar alone is worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood. I love the prime rib there, best in the city IMHO (flame suit on).

Try to take in a Broadway show. Check the TKTS location in Times Square for last minute tickets to many of the shows. MOMA is great, if you like modern art. Ferrari store on Park Ave in the 50s is a fun visit, but you won't spend the whole day there for sure. If you've never been to the Statue of Liberty, go. It's quite an experience, as is Ellis Island. For fun fooding, go to Little Italy and Chinatown (next to one another). Try brunch at Norma's in the Parker Meridian on 57th/58th between 7th and 8th, IIRC, but you need a reservation.

Have fun!!!!!!! Just walking around is great. By the way, if you are a jazz fan, check out Jazz at Lincoln Center. Late night at Dizzy's CocaCola club is fun and not terrribly expensive. It's at Columbus Circle, not far up from where you are staying.

50th and 10th is a nice area. but not in the "middle" of it all. definitely easy walk to times square and all the shops assuming you dont mind walking. do you plan on the subway or taxis to get to further stops.

from that area, you can walk to 7th which puts you on the upper end of the times square madness. walk down broadway to 42nd street to see what times square is all about. also there is rockafeller center.

if you want a nice dinner. ruth's chris steakhouse is on 51st street a little past 7th. a little pricey, but nyc is pricey even for a hamburger

walk a little further and you can see all of the 5th ave and madison ave shops. they'll run from that area up to central park.

to see downtown (wall street/ World Trade) walk to 50th and 8th and take the E train downtown. plan to explore that area for a bit.

if you take the E train to the 14th street stop, you are in chelsea. walk towards the cobblestone streets one night and go to the bars in the area. its more low key than the village, but has a mix up cool bars and stuff mixed in.

the streets will look like this although i cant gaurantee the cars will
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=139374091&postcount=38

the place in that picture, pastis, is actually a pretty nice restaurant. but im picky, so i usually only like the desert there. they have ice cream with what i've been told by a french friend are called cigarette russe.

and i still say make a plan to see south street seaport and take the ferry or walk the brooklyn bridge to go to grimaldi's for a pizza.

Are you a shareholder? Just curious.

For the OP, I still would avoid any chain that you can visit in numerous cities around the country. As long as you are in New York, you may as well eat in places that are uniquely New York.

Zagat's is well worth the $15 investment.

There are literally dozens of decent restaurants in all price ranges offering good food and nice atmosphere within a few blocks of where you are staying. Try some of them but also make sure that you try other areas of the city, especially downtown in the Village, Meatpacking District, Soho, Tribeca and the Lower East Side.

Manhattan is one of the safest cities in the country so feel free to go almost anywhere.

No, and I didn't make six posts about it in a thread about restaurants in NYC. Was that the only memorable restaurant that you visited in New York?

I'm sure that you enjoyed your visit to PH but I sure hope that you tried at least a few other restaurants during your time in NYC.

There's a number of decent restaurants in the area of 50th and 10th ave and some are popping up every month- its worth checking with your hotel when you arrive on recommendations.

In the meantime, I'd suggest Blue Ribbon Sushi (58th btw 8th and 9th ave), which has really good sushi and will have a good scene as well. Another good option might be Casellula on 52nd by 9th avenue- disclaimer: I have not been, but have heard its great on a number of occassions- its small plates that you can share and should have a good scene. Sorry to recommend one I haven't been too, but I don't know the restaurants up there as well as the ones downtown and wanted to throw out some options that might be more interesting than Planet Hollywood (not that there's anything wrong with PH, but you can do that in a lot of other cities).

Note, I have do not own stock in anything mentioned above..... enjoy your time in the city!
