I need to replace the rack bushing in the Cam Gears steering rack (1981 308 GTSi). The old bushing was pressed into a steel sleeve, and the sleeve was pressed into the rack housing and secured with a screw through the side of the housing. The new bushing I got has 3 tabs and won’t fit all the way into the sleeve Is the tabbed version just an updated part, or is it for a different rack? (TRW perhaps?)

Solution found thanks to another poster.

I read somewhere else on this forum that the 308 series had up to a dozen different possible rack/pinion assemblies through the years, and knowing which internal bits each takes can be a challenge (as I found out with my car). My steering rack was produced by Cam Gears LTD and bears the number 21465 on the housing.

Ferrari doesn’t currently catalog any replacement parts for these steering racks. Parts are available through the aftermarket, though, if you care to rebuild. Thankfully new rack/pinion assemblies are currently still available and can even be found on Amazon.

I’ve attached photos for reference. The bushing on the far left is the original that I ordered (149201BUSH). It is the correct length for the sleeve, but the outer diameter is too large and the inner too small to slide easily over the rack. It also has 3 external tabs that my original bushing didn’t have. Disregard the notches I cut in the sleeve to clear the tabs; that didn’t help. The two half-length bushings on the right are the ones that actually fit and they are part number 30807065, available from Superformance (in the UK) and ferrparts.com (in the US). The original was one piece (full length), and it takes 2 of the 30807065 bushings to make this repair.

As noted elsewhere, the most labor-intensive part of this repair is getting the rack/pinion in and out of the vehicle. The rack comes apart pretty easily and replacing the bushing doesn’t take long once you have the correct parts.
