I am replacing my cam sensor this week and found a Bosch item at eBay. Please check if this one is fine and advise bolt size - I checked mine and felt an M5 hex seems to work but can someone confirm.

Background is that my car once fully warm feels like it hunts for the right rpm as I coast lower than 10mph at stops. Feel I need to hit gas pedal to settle. Since the cam sensor is easy to access up top I plan to remove, inspect and for $150 why not just replace for good measure. With my MB dailies over 10yrs this cam sensor seems to fix such ills. My 355 idles, runs and accelerates beautifully apart from the described problem and honestly was shocked how easily accessible the cam sensor is on a 355. Figure to remove the intake tubes on right to get bolt access. So 10-15 min job?

Don't get confused between cam phase sensor with Crank Ref sensor. The picture shows crank Ref sensor?

    M6 bolt size- Thanks Daniel!
BTW I could not find this sensor in your website. First checked Ricambi (of course) as I know this is a critical unit for the engine management.

There are two different sensors being discussed in this thread.

6x12 on the crank sensor that Patrick posted a picture for (bottom of engine)
6x16 for the phase sensor that Ian suggested. (RR top of engine)

For clarity, this is what I am asking about.. Amazing how often this small item is a culprit for modern engines. Thank goodness it's a 5min process to reach in a F355. Another god send from the engineers apart from clutch access.

oh... Quavion - thanks for pointing out the Ricambi part no. 150866 - $130.. Better to source from 'the source' than fleabay! Guy's even based in Latvia so it would have taken a while to arrive.

Update: Ricambi delivered my new sensor and screw in 2 bus days this week, but I've still not managed to remove the old unit. The screw is solidly fixed, despite attempts with a rubber band, larger/torx and even a screw puller. It is an M5 hex bolt, at least when installed. Worried now I could grind it beyond the screw and to the threads th my extractor.

Tips anyone? I am now seriously thinking of driving to a proper expert to take over extraction before I do irreperable damage.

Tried heat? I've had some scarily tight bolts on engine sensors before, but with some penetrant, a heat gun and lots of patience, I've been able to remove them. The bolts sometimes give a loud click when they release though (raises your heartbeat a little).

Indeed you MUST use heat (heat gun) and i mean real heat, not a little hot . It takes time.
Protect the surroundings with metal sheet or tin foil or something. I got everything loose with heat. (old brake lines !!)

Never ever use open fire !!
