So looks like I have a leak from one of my cam seals. Passenger side. It is minor but I am going to have it replaced. I am at just under 28k miles and last year performed a major maintenance, ALL belts, water pump, all hoses, all fluids flush and replacement, the list is endless. Can anyone give me an idea what labor time is involved? And also perhaps what else is expected to be done at the same time. Cheers

Roderick, I had the same issue on my 328. With regard to your question "what else is to be expected to be done at the same time," you might want to check out the following thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328-sponsored-yellow-compass-group/400029-328-cam-seal-housing-o-ring-leak.html. Take a look at post #25 for details, but in October 1991 Ferrari came out with a service bulletin (SB 10-31) describing a procedure to modify the cam seal housings to assist with oil drain back into the heads. During my last major service I installed updated cam seal housings along with enlarging and re positioning of the rear bank exhaust drain back hole and I have been leak free ever since.

If your major last year was at an authorized dealer, and they did cam seals (which may be part of the "factory" major), then it may be covered by the Ferrari parts/labor warranty.

Is this a problem with 308's as well?

Not much of one on a 2v like yours. As much as I like the 4v motor the cam seal arrangement was unbelievably stupid.

The major service term for 3X8's is often confused with a belt service, which as you describe, sounds like what you had done. A major would include removing cams, distributors, adjusting valves, belts, tensioners..... If in fact you did get a major then go back to your tech.

With that said is the oil leak from the cam covers or at the distributor shaft ? Two different seals.

Thanks for the Excellent info. Any way I could get my hands on a play by play procedure on cam seal replacement? Cheers

Well, most people doing it don't have a good play by play or they wouldn't have so much trouble with leakage since they came into being in 1983. The parts the factory finally came up with to make it work are not even available anymore.

Roderick, I can't add anything to the technical question, just wanted to say hello to another 328 owner in BC. Any chance you'll be bringing your 328 down for the annual Father's Day Italian and French Car Show in North Vancouver? Jon

So the driver side should be a distributor shaft? I just discovered the leaks from there.

One of the design flaws of this arrangement is use of a round O-ring in square channel which is liable to being pinched when the cover is put on.

X-rings fit much better here. I used these with no leaks. Also remove any burr on the end corners of the machined channel for the ring.

The size of the rings is 4330 (BS330 in UK).
