So what was a high hydrocarbon emmissions report has turned into a misfire on the rear bank. Compression test completed and compressions in all cylinders is good. Good strong spark So the only things left now are injectors which are a pig to get to on the rear bank or cam timing. Question is with the cam timing the maintenance manual shows a tool that aligns the notches in the pulleys to TDC. However on removal of the cam cover there seems to be a timing plate fitted. However the pointers on the timing plate are offset and don't match up the notches at TDC. So what is correct the manual or the timing plate? Image Unavailable, Please Login
You are getting there Regarding your cams. if you turn another 180 degrees will they line up? There should be little notches on all the cams and they all should line up at the same time. Then have a look in the inspection hole of the flywheel and there is notch (PM.1) that should be line up as well. If that is correct you should be good. When you change the timing. Manually do at least 2 turns to see if you do not hit any valves. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Thanks guys Cam timing found to be advanced. Unburnt fuel being pushed out of the exhaust valves. Hopefully mot pass on monday
What was the magnitude of the error? A couple of teeth pitch (like suggested in your photo) or a few degrees?
It's from behind the back seat Cabs have an opening there to get to the cams other some other stuff. The black pipe is the where the oil dipstick goes in. Great work Nathan! Hope it will pass for you!
Nathan on the 3.0 there are "nicks" on the cam bearing caps that line up with the "nicks" on the cams . Very small bug def there if you look. I am lead to believe that same on both the 3.0 and 3.2 Once you see what I talking about it falls into to place. I have mine out at the moment. Use the thread to show u TDC on the flywheel and go fro there...u should see the little marks I am speaking of Peter
In for the test tomorrow. It's running very sweet. There are indeed the engine builders center punch marks on the cam shafts that align perfectly. It seems the timing plate fitted to the cam cover is mis aligned - I'm wondering if this is not an oem part....
I was wondering the same, but the look OEM to me.. The two are not equal so they could be switched. Best to do timing is to pull the cam covers actually. There are an additional set of notches. Have a look in to oil filler hole and look at the end of the cam shaft. Problem is you only have one hole Hope you will pass Nathan!
