I am working on the heads of my Stratos engine and setting the cams on the timing marks was a pain. I tried padded vice grips that kind of worked but still marked the cam. I had a set of NOS cams I didn't want to mar so I took a cheap 1-3/16" socket and modified it to fit the cam holes and still lay comfortably in the cylinder head casting . Problem solved, worked great. The other problem that came up was holding the tappet bucket down. I have the Hill Engineering tools as well as some other Fiat valve tools but they kept slipping off the tappet edge. I had some NOS tappet buckets and I noticed some had a nice wide flat rim and some almost no flat area at all. My problem tappets were essentially round on top of the rim, hence the slipping. I did the figure eight sanding method of the rim on 400 grit wet or dry paper till I achieved a nice flat ledge.

Clever idea with the socket. Much more elegant than vice grips.
