My daily driver is a Coupe cambiocorsa. I wanted a six speed but the dealer said it would take a long time to get one. i decided to try it since I hope to get a 430 in the future and wanted to to try the F1 cambiocorsa before getting one in a Ferrari. Overall the shifts seem to be somewhat slow even in sport mode. Last night a friend let me drive his SL55 AMG. I know you can't compare the performance side by side since the SL is much more powerefull. I was very impressed by the performace of the transmission. Upshifts were smooth and instantaneous as were down shifts. The shifts were much better than in the maser.
It makes me wonder if the F1 and cambiocorsa are really superior for street driving than a computer controlled auto like in the SL. On the track I'm sure that the F1 would be superior but for everyday fast driving I am not so sure if the added complexity and short clutch lifetime is that superior to a well programed automatic.

After reading so much on these systems in magazines and other peoples opinions- the good and the bad, I just can't comprehend why they are so popular. 80-85% of Maseraties and Ferraris and Lambos now come with them. I'm myft as to why more don't opt for the manuals. I hear so much about the shifts being slow (even though in the magazines they always say 150milisecond) and the problems with the clutch lives and other weird problems associated with them. I'm just surprised they are THAT popular. You have one - what about it makes it soooooo desireable? I just hear so much negative. Thanks.

The CC on the Gransport is a billion times better than in the Coupe/Spyder. It shifts quick as hell in sport mode, and even rev-matches on downshifts.

Finding a newer Ferrari/Maserati with a stick is almost impossible. I wonder if its the case that the factory limits sicks so dealers get F1.
The fact that the GS shifts well is kind of losty on me. If it works better then why not upgrade the software on other cars so they shift well also. The slow shifts hard clutch engagement etc are all correctable with software not an inherant desing diff.
Like I said before the auto box in the SL shifts so fast up and down that you never detect a lag. The manual shifting is very fast as well.
Fully auto transmissions are now very perfected I really can't see the big advantage of and F1 style shifter over a fully automatic tranny in mopst cases. Going for fast lap times would be different but for most driving if you want push button shifting get an auto. If you want to shift the gears yourself get a six speed.

There are actually a few manual Coupes on autotrader going at good prices. I almost pulled the trigger on one until deciding to go with a CC. Here is why...resale on the manuals is awfull, my wife would never get used to that 1st to 2nd gear change, every dealer I spoke with told me to go with the CC (even ones with manuals in stock) due to the antiquated shift linkage system.
Coming from an M3 with a manual 6spd it will be a change for me but I still like the system.

One of the keys to the F1 is learning how to use it. My suggestion is to initially put the car in auto and shift with your foot to figure out how it works. That is, press until you can sense that the computer is getting ready to shift, lift ever so slightly, and then floor it. With practice, you'll get the smoothest power shift that you have ever made.

Also while in the auto mode, play attention to when the computer shifts. You'll notice that it will short shift on upshifts, and really sandbag it on downshifits. I think that one reason people wear out clutchs with the F1 is that they are banging too many hard shifts, particulary downshifts.

Because many people can't drive manuals. Now Ferrari that offers a F1, people who otherwise could not drive a Ferrari (save an auto 456) can.

I just purchased an 04 Cambio Coup. And I am having a bit of a time shifting through 3rd gear. The car lunges forward a little.

Also in Auto mode the shift continues up to sixth even if my speed doesn't seem to warrant it. What's with that???

Other than that it is a really cool car. And I have not even hit redline yet.
Off the line it will give my Turbo S a hard time.

My previous Spyder would go up a gear or two higher than I would in manual-cc mode too, my GranSport doesn't. See whether your dealer can apply different programming patch if you use Auto a lot. I've given an answer to that lurch Q eleswhere...

Maserati/Ferrari needs to evolve to the dual clutch sequential shift technology.

Its superior in every way to the single clutch units in BMW's M5, Ferraris, Maserati's, and Lamborghini's..

Bugatti has a seven speed dual clutch unit as standard and Porsche is preparing to release the PDK dual clutch unit as well.

    good point,

but isn't it that a 5 or 6 speed manual is 19th century technology and F1 style is 21st century technology, if the 5 or 6 speeds were that good wouldnt' F1 still have em, but then do they still have transmissions in F1?

F1 the dif. between cars is measured in tenths and hundreths of a second. If the driver can shift manually in 500 miliseconds but an F1 style tranny can do it in 100 miliseconds the driver in the F1 equiped car will be faster.
For a street car I think the F1 style tranny is more of a gadget or for those who can't drive a true manual tranny.
In the seventies digital readout watches were all the rage the latest technology. Most people prefer a watch with hands and numbers.
Sometimes the latest technology isn't really an improvement over the old technology.

After a few days driving the Coup I can say I am really amazed. I have a 97 Turbo S and the Maserati is almost a fun to drive. The sound is actually better than my S. Obviously you don't get that turbo momentum but for the money I am sooo glad we got this car.

I am going to have to drive a GS now......
