Hi everyone, Ive always liked photography, but have never purchased a really decent camera. I have a really good deal on a Nikon D40 ($445) and a D60 ($645) from what Ive researched the D40 is the way to go for entry level. My thoughts are to forgo the D60 and go with the D40 for now and if I really start to get into photography (as a hobby) purchase a D80. As a sanity check would this be a good strategy or should I spend the extra on the D60 and get a few more features? Thanks, Chris
If you've never used a DSLR get the D40 and then skip the D80/90 and go for a D300, the D80 isn't a huge upgrade to the D40. I give this link for anyone looking for a camera. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm
Whatever you do, NOW is the time to decide if you are going to go with Nikon or Canon. Once you start buying lenses (which you will very soon), you are basically stuck with that brand. I ended up with Nikon gear because I owned a cheap zoom lens that I had with a 35mm camera. Luckily I like Nikon. And if it's between the D40 and the D60, I agree - spend the extra money on a nice lens. It makes a big difference.
I was all over that site in the last two days... great info there! Okay D40 on order...here we go!! Thanks everyone. Whats the best place to order lenses from? -Chris
I bought my lens for my Nikon D60 at www.BeachCamera.com good prices with free shipping cant find a better place to buy my gear....
I just bought my 40D from them and had no problems, from what I have read is sometimes they say they have something in-stock when they don't so just make sure you call first if you purchase from them.
Buy the D40. I have one, you can't beat the price/performance ratio. Invest the money you saved from not buing the D60 in nice lenses!
could not agree more. travel the world and use my d40 like it's growing off of my body. i blow up my pics and frame them around the house. i LOVE this camera. good luck.
Funny how canon isn't mentiond once, is Nikon the ultimate starter camera? or is everyone just more interested in nikon then canon.
For me I suppose it's brand recognition/reputation. BTW the Camera arrived about 3 days ago...can't put it down this is too much fun - have a lot to learn.
congrats on the camera and just wondering about your avatar picture... did you serve in the Airborne?
