I'm looking at the Nikon D60 and Nikon coolpix S600. I realize the D60 has more bells and whistles but will I notice the picture quality vs the two cameras? I know I'm comparing apples and oranges here but in the end is there really a big difference?

Huge difference! More programs to chose from, lens options galore, Nikon up-dates via the web. Nikon digital SLRs are some of the best. Spend the extra cash and find a package deal on line that includes multiple lens. Try Digicombos.com. ( Sorry I could not link it. )

I bought a D60 a few weeks ago and love it. I would highly recommend everyone whos is looking for their first DSLR. Try BeachCamera.com that is where i bought my lens not my camera but its a great store with great shipping and products. On their website you will find the lowest price iv seen from a reputable dealer, which is 750 for the D60 kit lens, and 940 for the D60 kit lens and 55-200 VR tele lens. I would recommend that option. But if you want one lens since you don't wanna be changing lens when your in the field get the expensive 18-200 VR or the cheap 18-135mm (thats the one i use for the D60) If your going to decide to get one lens and not the comb not online i would get the D60 body only and by the lens separately.

My post (jd121) are with a Nikon D60 and Nikkor 18-135mm lens (lens is $320 bucks). About 950 bucks for both the cam and lens. I got it for $870 however.
Blue4ref2 post is with a Nikon D40 (about 500 bucks) but with the most expensive lens the Nikkor 18-200 VR which is about $750.
Both of us prefer the D60 because of the 10 MP versus the Nikon D40 6MP and the colors look better on the D60, plus the D60 is cheaper. Take your side.

More like comparing apples to spaceships IMHO ;)

They are *totally* different tools and I think you've got to decide:

    1. Do you want it with you "all the time" for taking "snapshots" of the family etc - S600.
    2. Do you want to take "sports" pix? [motor racing? soccer? etc] - D60 + telephoto lens
    3. Are you happy carrying a bag with the body plus a couple of lenses? [Plus other "stuff" you'll accumulate] - If you know you want a telephoto, its no use if it lives in your closet.
    4. The D-series cameras are, if not pro-grade, then at least "serious hobbyist" - Do you see photography as a hobby? [Do you want to know the effect of f-stop on DofF or manually set W/B etc?]

    Back to you,
    HTH,
    Cheers,
    Ian

A lot lighter to carry around though

    Me too ^
When I use my Canon S2 IS point and shoot it feels so cheap compared to my new Nikon D60 and the nikkor 18-135. Its gotton to the point where i hate picking up the canon P&S and always love to shoot with the DSLR.

They always say, Once you go black theres no going back....:D

Thanks for all the input. I bought the D60 from Costco. It came with two lenses and a $125 discount.

how can you even compare a Nikon D60 a DSLR camera to some small digital camera? doesn't make any sence to me. Obviously the Nikon D60 is better.
