I've also made the cam locking tool from two plates of aluminum. Easy to do, and works effectively. The oak ones are good too and easy to make, but the aluminum plates are a snap, cheap and work well.

IIRC awhile ago, someone reported that this style cam lock does not work with the 3x8s.
The 308 cam gears are unusally small (~3") and unusually closely spaced. Also they use trapazoidal belt teeth while this tool is designed for the newer serpentine teeth.

Have you actually successfully used this NAPA cam lock?

This tool worked good for Me although I did have to mod it to fit around the belt retention flange on one of the cam gears.

I might have left the tool at the house( I work 2 states over) but all I had to do was dremel 2 slots to fit around the flange. If I can get a pic up I will.

I know this doesn't answer the question but I have to ask...where are these camshafts expected to go? I have replaced a ton of cam belts, chains and gears and have never seen a camshaft turn on it's own without somebody/something turning it - usually with considerable effort.

I have never changed the belts myself yet but I think that the fear is if a lobe is topped out the camshaft might rotate off the pressure from the lobe (or two) and then you are screwed. So these devices lock the camshafts in-place by clamping one to the other since they are so close together. In theory I suppose any way of preventing the camshafts from turning by accident is just a precaution.

The pressure of the compressed valves on the cam lobes will move the cam, especially on the QV engine.
