Hey guys, iv tried searching but come up with different answers that aren't too specific. Just booked a ticket for a friend to come visit me but he asked me if I knew if they would give him problems at the airport because of the DUI. Anyone know? Thanks guys

I can't imagine how in the world it would even come up... people in the US fly
with DUI's on their record I'm sure. I've not heard of US Customs doing background
    checks for civil infractions.

I'm sure he's just fine. Just tell him not to get drunk and try to fly the plane :)

Might be a problem if it was a felony DUI (if that's what it's called), but a 'normal' DUI shouldn't affect his travel... at least that's my guess...

    But, what do I know?

    :D

I don't think it would be a problem.

Tell him, "Don't go to the airport where my friend's mom works!"

As long as he isn't piloting...

    George......

Yes, a Canadian can enter the US with a DUI on their record. I had a DUI in 1994 and have been thru the US via the airport pre-clearance checkpoints about 75 times from 2000-2008, and that was before I got my official pardon granted in 2008.

FWIW any DUI up here is classed as a "felony", or an "indictable" offence as we call it.

When they scan your passport at the border or the airport, your CSIS record (if any) comes up immediately as Canada and the US share police records and have for many years.........as it is not viewed as a crime of "moral turpitude" by the US, such as a common assault, murder, or fraud, etc, would be, they will not bar you from entry, provided the rest of your answers to the standard questioning does not set of any alarm bells. You must obviously disclose the conviction if asked.

A DUI does bar you from entry to Canada though if you are entering from the US or another country.

This one has proven to be very inconsistent in my experience. I've worked with a lot of truck drivers who hauled loads into Canada from the US. I've had the same guys pass through the border and get declined at various times and at various border crossing locations. I never could figure out why, though.

At last - a factual "been there and know it" response. Thanks for the info, not that
I hope to have it matter in my OWN life anytime soon.

Pretty much anyone can fly into the USA - unless you are a USA citizen trying to get back home, at which time the Department of Homeland Security will stop you, strip-search you, empty your bags, question you to no end...

Is he trying to fly the plane himself, or just ride quietly in a seat? I'm guessing that in every cabin there are several owners of DUIs.

Had someone from Canada Customs call me. Just so everyone else know's the actual facts... It seems like he can enter the US without a problem, but just like Customs Agents are human beings, and human beings can have bad days all that can happen is being sent into that room for annoying questioning... Now what I was told was if its opposite (US citizen trying to fly/enter Canada) usually it's a higher risk not being let in as Canada has some stiffer laws.
