F40 is faster in a straight line....I can see how he would gain on the shifts, being that he didn't have to actually move his left foot, but the F40 driver could not have been on full throttle, or this guy is spinning tales.

    Whatever.....
    The M5 has a weight to power ratio of 8 to 1. The F40 6.3 to 1.
Which one do you think is faster??
This is a big reason why I only "play" on the street with people I know.
You have absolutely nothing to gain. If you win, well, you should. If you lose, OMG!, the other guy has the fastest car on earth and you are a POS!
    Whatever....

lol at that, an F40 would leave an M5 way way behind. What an absurd post.

Actually I learned this in High School. I had the fastest car, A '67 Chevelle with a 454 LS6 and 4:88 rear gears. A guy came up next to me and nailed it. My friend that was riding shotgun yells "get on it" By this time the guy has 5 car lenghts on me. As I start to get closer he shuts off. The next day it's all over school how this guy beat me......
    Whatever.....

I know a guy with a tuned M5 in Vegas who could *almost* keep up to a stock F40 in a straight line, flat out burst. I know, because I was riding in the F40 and was very surprised to see him stay alongside us for most of the way!

If its the new m5 and they use launch control vs the F40 that will most likely spin the tires off the line, I think the M5 will win up to about 40 mph. F40 on slicks with a good launch vs M5; F40 all the way

Interesting thread....earlier in the year a couple of friends went out for a blast, amongst the line-up was an F40 and an M5....and we were all surprised to as to how fast the M5 actually is on the roads up against the F40, CS etc...

You had to take into consideration that on public roads it was difficult for the F40 to put all (or alot of) its power down..without all those computers to aid driving (as in the M5), by the time the turbos wound up...we began to run out of road!...the F40 driver there had to be alot more cautious than the M5 one - all in all it wasnt a fair run/race.

M5 runs with a 550 up to about 150mph, when the 550 seems to run into a bit of a brick wall aerodynamically. It wouldn't even be cose to an F40.

Yea I had the same theory, also I think the M5s gear ratio's help it past that speed. eg, moving into a very short 6th versus a longer one in the 550.

    In reverse, maybe....

    though probably not.

Again, it all depends. Many M5 drivers tend to floor them as much as possible, and are ran by very subtle drivers (straight line "racing" is intrisically subtle), they simply rely on a 3yr warranty, german engineering and several e-stuff to fix their mistakes.
The F40 driver on the other hand knows he has a quite rare car, a legend of the 90s, that is rewarding to drive not in a GT4 way, but in a real-life way.

Good quote. Part of the fun of cars like the M5 (clk55 in my case) is the ability to do 200 yard long burn outs and just change tires every so often. Try that in an F40 a couple of times and open your wallet and say goodbye to your car for a few months. I would say own one of each (an F40 AND an M5).

That stinks. I didn't think super cars were so fragile. Or, that BMW's and MB's were so tough.

    Hmm...
What do you think would happen after doing a few burnouts in an F40??

    Wait a minute!

    Compare what is comparable.

    1) M owners are usually folks that are frustrated by the fact that they don't own Ferraris

    2) A 1987 F40 vs what? A 1987 M5?

A new V10 M5 is, let's face it, a very overweight, electronically controlled, beautifully made, German automotive appliance that has the beauty of exactly that.

Does it have soul? Hell, no!

Does it keep you awake at night dreaming about it? I hope not!

A Ferrari is a Ferrari and every other car manufacturer (including McLaren) spend their lives trying to immitate.

Remember, immitation is the highest form of flattery.

When I had my hopped up ZR-1 I was at a vette/viper shoot-out at route 66 dragway. So hearing american v8s and v10s battling it out down the track was fun at first...but after a couple of hours it's the same old song. Then out of nowhere comes the crazy-sounding burnout....kinda like a really mean dragbike of some kind...whatever it was it brought everybody running up to see what it was. And there was my dream car....an F40....just backing up into his tire smoke and lining up to the lights. The whole world seems to just stop and take notice.... Then he launches with a bit of wheel spin, kinda granny shifts to second....spins a bit more.....grannies third gear....more wheel spin....all in all a very controlled run perfectly straight. His quarter mile time was an 11.87 at 124mph. Stock vettes were maybe high twelves at best and stock vipers were low twelves. Only the modded cars were in the elevens. And here is a 2.9 litre v8 that is NOT intended for drag racing beating everybody!!! He made another run that at 11.80 with a bit higher speed but I don't recall what it was. The guy said all he had done was put a Tubi on and other than that...all stock, even street tires! There's no way any M5 (or hardly anything else) is gonna hang with a properly driven F40. That car made a life changing impression on me that day. And since then I've been lucky enough to get a ride at Gingerman raceway in a slightly tuned F40....just awesome!
