Can a modern car really be this painful to drive?

    My lady(boy) friend in Singapore drives a 2007 523i. She bought it new, it has 44,500 kms on it. So far I've done about 1,600 kms in it over the last few weeks. Dunno if the curse of Carl is alive and well but this thing is doing my head in.

    So the first issue was a rough idle, it was clearly running on 5 cylinders. Well, it took 10 days to get a space at the dealer. Plugged into the diagnostic machine told them nothing apparently. Eventually the rough idle was traced to a faulty coil, which was replaced. Ran fine for three days, then the rough idle returned. Back at the dealer they said "We need to reset the fault codes" so now it runs the same, except now when you start the car, the airconditioning runs irrespective of the fact the ventilation system was shut down when the engine switched off. The rough idle is now intermittant.

    Went to start the car yesterday and the electronic steering lock wouldn't disengage. The idrive prompt read "Steering lock faulty, engine cannot be started." Of course the car was in a car park. Left it for a few minutes with the ignition on then attempted to start the car, it did, all is well now for the time being.

    But!

    Now if the air conditioning is off, the car starts from rest in 1st gear, no problem there. If the air conditioning is on, the car will intermittantly move away from rest in 2nd, flare the 2/3rd. shift and whilst doing so, finally "Thump" into 3rd.

    But the best fix of all for my crazy friend? ....After discussing the faults and the way to get them fixed, she said "Don't worry lah, the car is very old, I'll just buy a new one." So she did, new 5 series arrives August.

    It does have some redeeming qualities, it is nice to drive, the typical BMW steering, the ride is pretty firm though with the run flat tyres and when it's running on all 6, that 2.5 litre engine is soooooo smooth. I saw one in a crash, BMW 5 versus Mazda MPV. You would NOT want to be in the Mazda.

    what's this got to do with Ferraris?

    A friend of mine had her Mercedes lock the steering while she was driving. When she reported it to the dealer, they told her it was impossible. She sold the car.

    it was a "C" something. was quite new at the time, but probably 18 months ago now.

    Dont believe the BMW hype the run flats are a POS, if you take them off the difference is like night and day.

    From experience you will get much better handling and ride will really soften up if you switch over to a set of decent performance tyres.
