Hi, I have had a problem recently while on track (still waiting to hear from mechanic) where when I started pushing up the revs, the car started spitting coolant. There is a drain tube on the cap of the expansion tank but it seems very small compared to the quantity of coolant which was dropped (car was covered with collant). Interestingly, after the mishap, I could still see some coolant in the expansion tank. The car had been recently serviced and collant changed. But after the service I added about half a liter of water wetter. I was wondering if this did not overfill the system ?
Depending on the level prior to your increase, yes it is very possible that you overfilled the system. On older cars like mine (328) the result will be a leakage of coolant from the tank via the drain. It is also likely that you will end with less liquid than required. Just add up to the maximum level and keep it controlled. Ciao Eugenio
Agree. This has happened to me on at least two occasions now. And remember, to get a true visual of where the coolant level is, you need to wait till the car is cold.
There is no precise way to determine exactly how much coolant to put in. The system requires some air space for expansion of the coolant and that air space is determined by how hot it will get. That is not the same for all conditions and is why an overflow is provided. Many filling systems including the ones manufacturers use just fill to the top and allow the car to determine its own level. Just fill it to the top.
According to the manual the coolant level should be between 2" and 3" from the top of the filler nozzle. At least on the 355...
