Can I check for oil leaking between engine sump and gear box?

Is there a way to determine if motor oil is getting into the gear oil or vice-versa? Mechanic says seepage at the external shift shaft seal means the internal o-ring between the engine and grarbox sumps is probably leaking too. The external seepage in question is an occasional drop. Is this a slow-mo problem or is immediate action needed.
