There seems to be a steady influx on the market of really good-looking, highly detailed Gallardos at what seem to be very attractive prices, all coming from dealers in Florida. I have my eyes on an '05 with less than 4,000 miles, with clean Carfax, which is selling for about $130K in Naples.

The questions are - why are there so many great value Lambos in Florida? Is there a catch? What Florida dealers would you trust, and which ones you'd never buy a Lambo from? Anyone with direct experience out there?

I'm not sure, but I believe Florida is the one state where it's not required for the DMV to show salvage on a title. I've heard that buying cars from Florida can be a risky venture. I bought a 996 TT from Domani Motors in Florida. I took the car to my mechanic after delivery, and the car had never been in an accident. I got lucky in that sense, but the car did have mechanical issues like the pop out of 2nd gear (which was a $10K fix) and also minor cosmetic stuff. That however is more a reflection on an unscrupulous dealer and my own failure to do proper due diligence.

I wouldn't trust a clean car fax though. All it takes is for someone to not report an accident to authorities and the DMV. After fixing the car, none would be the wiser (especially carfax) until a thorough ppi is performed. I've learned to never buy a car sight unseen even if the car is cheap. The best thing to do is to perform a thorough test drive (a spin around the block won't suffice) and have an unaffiliated mechanic do an extensive ppi.

There are a lot of high end cars in Florida. I travel there every 2 weeks and one of the best things about going down there is the cars. Between Boca and Miami on any given day, I will see 3-4 Lambos, Jags, Mercedes, a few Aston Martins and 5-6 Ferraris and several cool choppers. There just seem to be more there than anywhere else I have travelled

And in addition $130K might even be a little high in this market considering 04's are staring at $100K.

if it is Naples Motorsport they charge for Prepurchase inspections. Make sure you get one though if you buy from them.

    good luck

I think the car I was looking at is gone. I would always have a PPI done by a Lambo specialist, but coming from Chicago I would hate to waste time & money to go and check out a lemon. That's why before I buy from so far away I'd like to be sure at least that I'm buying from a reputable, honest dealer.

    Dear Lamborghinisiti,

Florida has no winter and is just a wealthy market. You will just have more "toys" here like California.

    Year round driving

    No state income tax

    2 Official Ferrari dealers

    3 Official Lamborghini dealers

A lot in high end independent dealers

I sure wouldn't buy any "older" cars from Florida. I just worked on a 1990 Bentley and it's a complete disaster because of all the rust from what i'd guess to be -- too many hurricanes, too much salt air, too many cloud bursts...

That, and the fact that the person who sold it in Florida was a complete liar and misrepresented the car, another reason to watch out with Florida cars.

Not my car, so I can't say I care that much, but I do feel for the (california) guy who bought it.

You can't compare Florida cars with, let's say, Los Angeles cars. I've been in Florida a lot, and I lived in Los Angeles for 25 years. The climates are so completely different -- I'd never buy an older Florida car whereas I'd have no problems buying and older Los Angeles car.

Con artists in both places, obviously. But the cars are just different.

    Cheers,

    Fred

    OK,

Good point about the coast. The salt air does corrode a lot faster. But it doesn't rain salt water. If you drive your car as a daily....you will be fine.

Hurricanes in FL, tornado's in the Midwest ( add flooding :( ) and earthquakes in CA. Many pitfalls to watch out for.

Con artists are also found in big corp. and big gov. ...nothing new there. :D

I guess a good PPI is a must where ever you buy your car from !

this whole post seems to be about one 1990 bentley. Are you sure you want to condemn all florida exotics based on this? i would imagine most gallardos in florida with 4k miles are lightly driven and kept in garages. not sure how the enviro would affect that. in fact, considering the number of cars and the current economic problems in florida, i would imagine quite a few good deals could be had.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm not thinking of buying a vintage car - I'm talking about a nearly new '05 Gallardo with one previous owner. Actually the car is still for sale, the price is down to 129K. The seller is the BMW dealer from Naples. Usually BMW dealers seem to be quite "straight" (BMW maintains very high quality standards for their sales network, at least in my European experience), any reason why this car shouldn't be trusted? Again, it has a squeaky clean Carfax, one owner and less than 4K miles. Too good to be true? In Europe a car like this would set you back close to 200K.

The Gallardo market in the US is very soft, the price is not "too good to be true" for a 2005 at all. In fact I'm thinking you could do even better.

I know nothing about the BMW dealer in Naples, but there is no reason whatsoever to be scared of a Florida car simply because it's Florida. Yes, there are some slimy crooked dealers here, but they exist EVERYWHERE.

As with any used car though, from ANY dealer, or individual, I would want to see it in person, and of course have it inspected by an independent 3rd party shop.

I can't remember which but one FL dealer used to 'help' by offering to arrange a PPI at another dealership the same company owned.
