Lynch the mechanic, he's trying to line his pockets etc..WTF? Who are you guys anyway? He made a mistake in his claim. MANY techs don't know the warrenties on cars..There are so many different warrenties out there,,some manufactures change them every year!! or revise what will or will not be covered (Ferrari is one). Do you really think your tech has the time... not only keep up to date with technolgy that continualy changes, haveing to deal with customers such as the one who started this thread, and run a business, and keep customers happy, really has the time to read up on manufactures warenties..for every car he works on? Do you understand that most cars when they hit over 5 years old..are generaly assumed to be out of warrenty? If your car was a 2002 or 03 model..I'm quite sure he would have said..take it to the dealer for warrenty.

Why would a shop owner do this intentionaly? To make a quick buck only to lose you as a customer and tarnish his reputation? Some how I don't think so.

Why did you not call you mechanic and ask if he new about the 8 year emission warrenty? I'm quite sure he would have appreciatged the info. Why are you all of a sudden thinking the he is trying to rip you off?

This post shows a complete lack of respect for those you guys depend on to keep your toys running. You guy obviously have zero understanding of what a mechanic has to learn and understand, and the time and stress that builds up becasue of this.

My question: Is he a Ferrari Certified mechanic? If so, he should know this. I purchased my current 355 Fiorano in May 04 and has the 2 year waranty so obviously I would bring it to a dealer for any problems...however in the past with my other 328 I would only bring it to a local certified Fcar shop for little repairs like water pump, brakes, etc just b/c it's conveniently located...anything other than that I would bring it to the dealer.

    Right on, brother Bruce.

How can you possibly expect an independent mechanic to be aware of all warranty information on all the cars they service? It's a joint effort. You learned something he didn't know. So what? Share the info with him and work together to get it fixed rather than whining about how 'not sure you can trust him any more'.

I never punished an employee of mine for making a mistake, only for not being willing to own up to it and ,with my help if needed, make an honest effort to correct it.

After all, we're only human. At least I am.

I didn't know about the warranty myself until he informed me of the problem. He told me I needed to purchase new cats. So I did my research and at that point discovered the warranty. Once I learned of the warranty I asked him if he was aware that my cats are covered under warranty. He said he knew about the warranty. So the issue of trust results from him not informing me about a free repair which he had knowledge of. He's an independent who only works on Ferrari's. He's not an authorized repair facility for Ferrari.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I can't conclude that he was trying to take advantage of me as it could have been an honest mistake. I think I'll take this as a red flag and I'll be a little more cautious going forward working with him.

I think that you have the right attitude.

But remember, if he had your best interests at heart, he would have checked before getting you a (rather high) quote for replacements.

When my mass air flow sensor failed on my BMW 540, my independent mechanic checked the factory TSBs (technical service bulletins) and found one that covered the replacement. The funny thing is that the dealer denied knowledge of the TSB--until I read him the number my independent mechanic had provided me. My independent guy (Bill Ballon in Pittsburgh) saved me money, not only at his shop, but at the dealership too.

He's a great guy, and I hope you find a Ferrari mechanic like him!
