    Ok, don't flame me...

have a friend working on a very custom 69 Camaro convertible and we were chatting today about engines....Sure he can do an LS7, but what does it take to drop in a 458 motor.

obviously a custom bellhousing that can be made to match up to a 6 speed

Can one convert engine management of a 458 to Motec?

    Has anyone done this?

    Thanks!

    Andy

Look up Ferrari 458 Scion FRS on Google and you will see tons of pics, info, and video on a drift car that debuted at SEMA this year. I checked it out in person and it was AWESOME. I'm sure you can get some ideas there. As for gearbox the car had a non-Ferrari box with a custom bell housing and ran a stand alone engine management system.

If you want to see something else cool check out V12 LS Engines | I got to know the brothers doing this and it is epic.

    Great

How about dimensions? what is the height, width and weight of a 458 motor?

    Thanks

I think that really don't matter that much.
You'll have to do a lot of custom cutting and fitting anyways.
I assume the vette's engine bay is bigger than the toyota 86.
the real problem as I see it, is the view blocking by the intake plenum of the 458 motor.
If I were to further modify that toyota-86-with-458-engine, i'd reroute and make custom air intake so that the front will be flat, to some degree at least.

775 hp and 498 lbs is pretty impressive. 8000 rpm redline, too.

But, needing 7 liters to get that power isn't so impressive. ;)

Anyone know what that bad boy costs ?

BTW, isn't that a boat motor (speedboat racing) ? Not that it couldn't be put into a car I'm sure.

David- My last 7 liter Z06 had 505 hp, so yes, 775 hp is pretty impressive.

I think it is 29k. It is automotive specific, not marine. 110hp/l is pretty good for an engine that size.

Good point, but isn't that vette engine still using push rods.... or, did they finally modernize their valvetrain to overhead cams on that iteration ?

    The LS7/505hp is a pushrod/2 valve motor.

Current vette motors are the same.

Interesting choice on the 4 cam LS variant. I would much rather have that then the 458 motor and its cheaper. On a side note just because the LS/LT series doesn't have cams doesn't mean its not high tech.

Actually cam in block makes for a smaller lighter weight engine.

You obviously know they put 396 & 427 in Camaros originally and those had room to spare. You would not have any issue fitting a 458 engine in there. As stated the height might be an issue but we've all also seen Camaros with blowers sticking out the hood so that's not much of and obstacle either. Biggest obstacle is getting its engine management/electronics to make it run.

biggest obstacle is needs to have proper gearing as the 458 Ferrari engine is not a low RPM torque monster like any LS motor .. need to be aware as the transmission and differential needs to be right want to take advantage of that 9000rpm redline

That's a good point. That engine was never meant to move as much mass found in a 60's pony car. Maybe a nice v12 out of a 575... More torque :)

My best guess would be Motec.
