I don't know much about rap music. In the beginning, I heard- "pimp, thug, jail, drugs, guns"... and just tuned-out. I know rap has expanded and grown. It can't still just be about street punks bragging about getting their game-on, and talking about jail? Its been at-least 10 years and the music is still going strong. There must be a grown-up, more sophisticated side to rap?

I have to buy a gift for a co-worker who, although he looks like the poster child for a Fortune 500 magazine cover story... likes to listen to rap music in his spare time. There's a reason I don't like to ride with him in his Ferrari (550, nice taste in cars) but the music is a little hard to take.

I got him in Secret Santa and he wants me to get him a rap CD... he thinks its funny to put me through it. I'd like to make a smart choice... what's the trend in rap music like now? Thanks!

    10 years, that's funny...more like 30 years or so.
There's really too wide a range in rap music...any hints on what this person listens to?

I'm an old school rap guy...you know, rock the party type...

Yep I remember Blondie in the 70's doing some kind of Disco Rap... but it seems like the last 10 years its been hard to watch MTV because of the Thug/Pimp Rap they play as mainstream teenager top 40 hits. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend a type of rap that isn't Pimp or Thug style. Last time I rode with my friend he was playing "shake ya azz" which seemed pretty funny, if you saw how button-up, blue blood, stiff-shirted this guy is around the office.

Kid Cudi* is underrated IMO but very, very talented. He's not mainstream by any means. I think it's more like Indie-Hip-Hop and not "rap." Check out his debut album Man On The Moon. It's amazing. I've got over 160 Kid Cudi tracks on my iTunes and they're all good. PM for more info.

Odds are anything you buy he will already have or not like.

But if you want to show how cool you are get some 80s Slick Rick for him.

If you want something new the latest Kanye is really good

Rap is like country music, the whole situation is effed up but the attention is focused on the good times.

Everytime I end up at a country bar I'm reminded of why I quit listening to it a long time ago.

It's viturally impossible to distinguish between songs.

Well let me rephrase that, the comparison was a bit harsh.

Hmmm...don't think I can actually. Comparing rap and country music was a mistake, but when people say "oh rap or country music sucks it's the same stuff over and over again" it's true but that's just....fine to those who feel their own experiences through the song. I can truly listen to either genre and go "I'm grateful I don't have to go through that" in the back on my mind on specific songs.

With that said, I suggest "No Mercy" new album by T.I
