Having had to suffer through the Derek Daly days, I have no problem with Varsha...
I usually agree with Mike and really enjoy his posts; that being said, I like Bob Varsha and enjoy SPEED's coverage in general. That being said, this is only my second year of watching F1 and feel that the "101 facts" that Varsha provides has helped me understand, appreciate, and intelligently discuss F1. This was the impetus for me posting on the F1 board. Now, in a few years will I be tired of this type of coverage? Possibly, but that balance would be a very difficult one to strike in an F1 broadcast.
Dealing with corporate a-holes all day has me ornery as well. My job lately is like dealing with the FIA... Srt is entitled to his opinion as much as anyone.
No probs your dead right!. Murray I suppose it's a Brit thing I don't really know for sure .. I just loved his passion for the sport and it just seemed his brain couldn't cope with the excitement, and as it came out of his mouth it was just LMAO at his comments ..maybe it's I just grew up watching F1 with him presenting, and it's fond memories.
Varsha explaining the KERS graphic is nothing. Daly once felt the need to explain the concrete running along the outside of some of the corners. "It goes asphalt, grasscrete, grass." Makes you wanna hit him!
All joking aside I once was invited to a speech given by Daly and I really enjoyed it. In fact I thought it was one of the best speeches I ever heard about F1. And I'm pretty hard to please in that regard, snob that I am. As much as I love Hobbs, Speed TV could really use a more recent F1 driver as a commentator. His connection with the sport is more like war history at this point. And no, I'm not thinking of Michael Andretti or Lackof Speed. JPM or Villeneuve would be fun though.
Haw about... Mansell ? Yeah, that's it: Mansell, Michael and Darrell Waltrip, and that Dale Jarrett guy, that's the ticket !
+1000 I always appreciate Mike's comments as well, I think he is one of the most informed Race/Car Enthusiast, it is a privilege to read his posts.
i couldn't disagree more with the OP, but yeah, that comment took the cake. besides being stupid it was insulting.
Isn't that a place that has something that the United States doesn't have ? But I agree - that IS an insult to say that.
I agree with you. Wholeheartedly. I'll go a step further and say I would rather have 'interviews' with the grid girls than softball questions to the driver. I care more about the leggy blonde in front of the Renault, and what her name is, what she does for work, if she's single and what kind of guys she likes, than I care about whether Piquet thinks the tires will grain badly before the 2nd stint. It's not like Windsor ever gets any good driver interviews, or asks any sort of hard question, so at least give the (predominantly male) viewers what we want. Hooties.
Agree! Ever listen to the commentary on BBC... not just F1, but any sporting event for that matter. The commentators manage to imbue the commentary with urgency and excitement. Hell, it could be Piquet moving over to get lapped by Vettel, and the announcer will be climbing up the wall with his voice full of emotion. I like that. Infinitely better than Varsha The Oaf yapping on about the major storyline of whether McLarens new mini-me diffuser will push Hamilton into challenging his countryman Button. Anyone who'se watched more than 11 minutes of F1 just rolls their eyes and realizes it's bullpoop. It's listening to a politician speak. They need to speak to their audience intelligently and in a reasonable manner instread of rolling out sound bytes that sound good but ring hollow with even the most casual of fans.
Me too, Steve. Murray would stand through the entire broadcast and you could hear an excitement and anticipation in his voice similar to that of a teenage girl attending her first Duran Duran concert. OTOH, James Hunt sounded as though he was on an overstuffed armchair, smoke in hand, drink on table, periodically glancing up at the race from a monitor in between reading the morning paper. A team from the heavens those two.. Count me in the 'don't mind Varsha' corner, although I tend to watch the Brit version, even though Speed is an option for the Canadian contigent.
Really? You think I am "angry" about Varsha? I am stubborn. I'm tenacious. I'm smart. I'm usually right. But I'm never angry. When I call someone a cretin, suggest they be dipped in boiling oil, or tarred and feathered, and wonder whether their missed their calling as an oaf, there is a good chance I'm not actually genuinely angry about the subject. I do think Varsha sucks. I am sure he's a nice guy and I feel bad for thinking a nice guy sucks, but he still sucks. I sometimes have to fire bad employees who are good people. I feel bad about that too... but sometimes you have to serve the greater good. There is no denying that eviscerating Varsha, tying his twitching limbs to quarterhorses and tossing some carrots in various directions would be doing god's work.
Well, if I just rolled out of bed with Roseanne Barr, I'd probably think Barbara Streisand was a looker
Thanks Tony, don't worry, I will get that bottle of wine right out that I promised to send if you backed me up!
I hope to God you don't think Daily or Posey are a better alternative....oh lets get Danny Sulivan in there too. If so I'll have to go and worship the porcelin god. He's the color guy and not a bad guy either you just have to give him a little bit of a break...they are not even there, they get slight delay before we see it and are only working with world feed. Peter Windsor gets on my nerves some too but he does have the in-road to the team members more than anyone else would. You just have to live with their quirks. d
I think Varsha is great and along with Hobbsie and Matchett make my fave F1 announce team. I've met Varsha before and he is just as approachable and candid as his TV persona. Plus he has an excellent broadcaster's voice. They already have the grizzled Brit race veteran and technical wiz to balance him. I even like Windsor, although it would be much easier to replace him compared to the others.
I actually like Varsha and the whole Speed TV gang. My only complaint is when Hobbs, at least once per race, when something extraordinary or exciting happens, goes "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW." Example from this past weekend: when the Toyota pit crew replaced the front wing on one of their contenders. If you taped the race, watch that part again and you will know what I'm talking about.
