Due to some differing points of view with a coworker (who happens to be the owner/founder etc of the company I was subcontracting with) I've decided to only work with him on a case by case basis from now on, and I'd rather not use his company name in the future when doing business.

In other words, I'll be forming my own corp. this month and running all my business through it... I just need a name.

So, in short of what I do is essentially financial planning for seniors and occassionally pre-retirees/retirees.

The majority of my estate planning clients are 70-100 years old (avg age is near 80)
(this is 60% of my business and its very intricate/detailed planning... extremely time consuming)

My retirees but not quite 80 year old clients... we assess their portfolios which are typically overly invested in ****ty equities and high risk investments. We then make recommendations and reduce risk. We make sure that if they need nursing care or assistance that their healthcare costs will be completely covered by qualifying them for entitlement programs through the state, the VA, etc... (Probably 35% of my business, however these cases are some of my favorite to work on, so I wouldnt mind doing it more often)

and lastly for people under 50... its typically just an occassional life insurance policy... probably 5% of my business and less than that of my profits. (For the most part its mindless when people are young and healthy)

I need to come up with a business name that encompasses the brunt of my business which is basically helping seniors utilize various entitlement programs to increase their incomes, reduce their costs, and preserve their assets. (pretty much estate planning, wealth preservation, and retirement income planning)

The programs can cover the entire cost of nursing home care, which down here costs nearly 7k a month.... THIS IS WHY PEOPLE SEEK ME OUT 90% of the time. (so that they don't need to self pay for the care and leave the healthy spouse poor.)

Sooo now that you have an idea of what I do..... Anybody have a good business name that is niche specific.. and unused ;)

    Thanks

You need an identity as much you need a name.

    B-mak?

I enjoy working with the 60+ crowd, and its been my niche helping the more mature end of the senior crowd. I seem to do well with the 75+ crowd because they have incentive to work with me. (It's easy to make a compelling argument to make "financial moves" when by following a plan given by me you can qualify for over 20k (tax free) from various programs that I'm well versed in.

On the even MORE MATURE end of my clients, with sound planning, in some cases, you can get the entire cost of there nursing home care covered as well. (Yes an elder law attorney does the same thing but they tend to charge 5k-15k for their services)

I just don't want to totally weed out the younger generations out of my business plan, they just arent my main target market.

(i guess point taken).... I'll continue to market to the elderly. maybe form a separate division for the close to retirement crowd.

EDIT: Thanks for the criticism and advice.

A lot of my work is pro bono....

Our firm is an RIA so we can legally do fee based planning... where we'd charge a $500 fee. (it was purely to prove commitment)

On 30-40% of the cases a financial product would be recommended and I'd earn a commission on the product.

The solution to their long term care needs builds my credibility. Referrals have become the main portion of my business lately and of course the seminars that I'd put on quarterly.

(Ultimately I'll build a website and branch out of South Florida if it becomes as big as I'd like it, but for now its providing me with a pretty simple living situation, but like I said, this need to branch away from the previous contractor was not planned, sh*t happens, adapt, and move forward ;))

A lot of our work in this area is probono too. I use the time sheets and an aplication of the avg cost as a tax write off at end of year if we need it.

Dont get stuck on a name. Half of them are made up words anyway (...GEICO Expedia Google Microsoft...) and mean nothing. You could call it WillyBeenThereAndBackAgain.com and as long as you are any good, people will come running.

Another point is... you need to be subscribed to FChat to ask this type of question.

    hmm, financial assistance/consulting for seniors...
....maybe simple like "silver_lining" or "silver_linings"?
the guys ^^ are right, people will come to you, not the name, so IMO simple is better

I think b-mak was saying you need a brand not just a name. Doc is right that any old name will work fine for an LLC.

I'd work the problem backwards. I'd find a domain name I like and make my LLC name some flavor of that... (actually that's not what I would do.. that's what I did! ;-)

You'd be wise to try to get something like VeroEstatePlanning.com or similar. All the names you want are taken, but don't let that stop you. I had a client who wanted LargeCityInTexasEstatePlanning.com but it was taken. He called the owner and for some very small number (I think $1200 IIRC) he bought the name WITH the existing website that ranked #1 in google for that term. We slapped a VOIP tracking number on it and he got 3 clients in the first month he had it... BIG ROI.

^thats awesome. 1200 is nothing to not have to do any SEO work from the start.

Also, to have 3 qualified estate planning leads..... can't beat that!

It stinks that I've been building "his brand" for 2 years, its a shame when a relationship is tarnished. It shouldnt be too hard, my office is closer to west palm now, and no longer up near vero.

Most of my clients aren't super affluent, so words like wealth typically scare away those with any less than a 200k liquid net worth... which are still a large portion of the class I work with... and to be honest, some of my favorite clients. Otherwise something like wealth preservers , wealth preservation advisors, senior asset preservers, etc etc...

feel free to expand and critique!

Side note, does the silver subscription allow access to the business section? And I'm not advertising my company, i havent posted anything about contact info, just looking for ideas and feedback from people who have done this successfully. (If i'm misunderstanding the rules, I have no problem complying... i plan to subscribe anyway.... just have a 20k tax bill that took priority)

A silver subscription will get you into the Silver Subscribed, Business & Investments and Politics & Religion sections. Some of the best threads are in those sections. It is only $15 for a year and well worth it.

    Two suggestions:

I wouldn't spend a lot of time on your name. But people DO ask why your business is named what it is. So try to come up with something that will give them a good feeling about who they are dealing with. Also, in this age of the web, don't make it difficult to spell etc. If you don't have a business card handy, it's nice to be able to say "Go to apolloinvesting.com and check it out."

Firstly, it's not original, but the Greek gods are often used for business name. Apollo for instance, is the god of harmony and poetry and music. Stuff that should be part of retirement.
    http://www.happy-gods.com/happy-gods.html
Ummm...be careful, Hades is the god of wealth, but he also has some more negative associations. So make sure you check around a bit.

Second obvious suggestion. If you decide or find a name you like, but it is taken, think about whether you can just add "investments, or something onto it (ApolloInvesting.com). However, be careful with that also. I know someone who added a US onto their name. Thinking "everyone" would understand that he meant FerrariUS (not the real name) but now everyone thinks the name is Ferrarius (again just an example). It's bad.

Finally, in my experience over the past couple years, there is no better or more interesting site than FerrariChat to learn about everything. Not just cars. I would urge you to become a member.

Not sure if someone already suggested this but I'd just keep it to the point: William ___ Financial Planning.(or similar) Spend a few bucks having an appropriate logo designed etc. and it'll look great. Using your name will work well as people will feel comfortable using the guy who owns the company. Good luck.

^thats why I'm looking at something directly relating to the niche at which my business is founded upon, yet all encompassing to not shy away the NON SENIOR clients, who actually want to plan and protect assets

GEICO stands - or stood for - Government Employees Insurance Company.

I don't agree with: "qualifying them for entitlement programs through the state, the VA, etc... "

So I'll refrain from saying anything about bankrupting taxpayers or....whoops, too late.

    decided on "Senior strategies group"

I could make it my URL or something close to it, but I think people will get hung up on spelling strategies....

If you have any ideas for a simplistic, memorable, yet functional/related url.... I'm open to suggestions.

PS. I tried to sign up rossa and it gave me issues a couple days ago, i'll try again when I finish dling chrome.

Do you really want to remind them of their age in your own name? How about changing Senior to Advanced?
