Can you machine turn the rotors on a 996?

    I went to replace front brake pads on my 01 996 and the rotors are glazed and uneven. Can they be machine smoothed as in the old days? Champion Porsche says no and rotors must be replaced. Car has 59K miles. I have a Saab also and the dealer said no. I realize it may not be recommended but anyone with experience, please give opinion and please explain why rotors on newer cars cannot be turned? If so, does anyone have experience with an aftermarket rotor that works well? Brake job is $1200 from dealer.

    Buy the rotors yourself, and they won't cost that much more than the cost of removing the old rotors and machining them; and if they're bad enough to require machining, you may as well toss them.

    I bought mine from Jeff at Sunset Porsche, which does a lot of mail order volume. At the start of 2007, they were Front Rotors 106.77 ea, Rear rotors 95.54 ea. Not so bad.

    Agree completely. Not worth it at all on practically ANY Porsche. Did same with my 993 at around 95,000 miles. If you take care to replace the pads you should be getting pretty decent rotor life.

    Any rotor will wear, and there will be a minimum thickness spec for the rotor. If it is above this spec, it can be machined, so long as it stays above it. Rotors are rotors, generally.

    Having said that, I have two BMW's that go through rotors like crazy... I get about 25k miles out of a set. The easy fix, however, is just to do the brake job myself and buy the parts myself instead of at the BMW dealer. They are still OEM BMW parts but I get them from Turner Motorsports, and a brake job costs around $300 instead of around $1000 at the dealer.

    Probably the same with a Porsche.
