We will be leaving for 5 months and I am leaving my beloved 458 on the factory provided trickle charger.

However, I think it would be better to at least start it once a month and let it run for 15 minutes or so and the valets in the building are ok to help me on that.

Is it ok to start the car whilst it is on the trickle charger or am I causing damage?

Your wise counsel would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Besides the warnings above, you car will NOT start if connected to the factory plug under the passenger side dash. The connector is wired to prevent a start up and drive away while connected. You will get a battery symbol on the dashboard and the car will not start.

Will not start, if you try to start it, you will see a pop up on the screen saying charger is plugged in. Not smart to start once a month, leave her be...:)

Thank you all for your sage advise.

    One more follow up question.

If I were to ask the valet to turn of the electricity at the outlet and then start the car - would that be ok. With other words, yes it would still be connected under the dashboard but no electricity flowing .

I am just concerned that the connection under the dashboard may be a bit too finicky, however, turning off the electricity should be no problem.

    Thank you.

It is not wise to start a car, that is in storage. Builds up moisture in your exhaust, etc. It's detrimental to the system.. When you get back, let her warm up nicely than give her a rip!

Starting it and idling it, and not letting all the fluids get to full temperature for many miles, will build up moisture. It's really bad for the car. As others have said, let it sit, then take it for a proper drive when you get back.
Of course the best thing to do is to use it often and properly. but if you don't have that option. I think letting it sit is the second best option. When it sits, inflate the tires to the max sidewall pressure, and MAKE SURE that rodents can't get to the car! They can cause A LOT of damage.

There is a jumper in the connector that plugs into the dash that will prevent the car from starting even if you unplug the charger from the electrical outlet. So impossible.

Thank you all for your input, and the verdict is clear and unanimous - trickle charger only it is!!

I really learned a lot and did not know about the "failsafe" that even prevents starting when the charger is connected.

As mentioned above, Rodents can be a big issue. If your home w/ be empty, it's best you buy a car capsule. That will keep all rodents out, and also circulates air within, to limit humidity, etc. I have one for a classic Porsche, that I keep at a vacation home...

In addition to the above, you could add air to the tires so they wont (temporarily) flat spot. I will usually look at the max psi the tires are rated for (on the tire sidewall) and add about 10% less (most tires seem to be 50psi so I will set it to 45). Leave a note on the dash- tires overinflated for storage! This way you remember to reset them lower before you drive it. Given it might be moved around by valets, Im not sure if I would do this, but if the car is going to remain in a spot for several months then its not a bad idea. I would see if the valets could just take a look at the car and the tender every now and then. Make sure everything looks ok. No need to open the car, but certainly look at the tender and make sure the lights are showing the correct status- and if not, to give you a call.

If you want to add to my post above and others ..throw 2 or 3 boxes of flow thru arm and hammer baking soda in the cabin and even trunk

There a reason for the charging system to act this way. It’s to prevent you from driving away while still connected to the charger.

I'm sure nobody bothers with this in cars, but in piston aircraft engines, when we store them for more than a couple months, we remove the top spark plugs (2 plugs per cylinder) and replace the plugs with dehydrator plugs. Helps keep the cylinders dry and rust-free...
