So the title pretty much says it all. I heard you can take a ferrari out of gear (like 2nd or 3rd) without hitting the clutch. Is this true? Seems odd.

Very easy to do and it hurts nothing provided you do it the right way. If you are in gear and driving along with your foot on the accelerator, pull the car out of gear just as you release the accelerator. This unloads the gears just enough to pull it smoothly out of gear. Once you get the hang of it the car just falls effortlessly out of gear without ever touching the clutch.

And you can also downshift and upshift in most standard transmission cars without the clutch.

Upshift yes, downshift requires double declutching for smoothness.

Nope, you can upshift AND downshift without using the clutch at all. I wouldn't recommend learning how on a Ferrari though!

If you match the revvs properly, you don't have to even use the clutch. I'm not good enough at it, so I just use the clutch, but when I'm really lazy, I go for it clutch-less.

Your right Scot. Downshifting is harder but can be done.

Lost my clutch cable in an older Porsche and drove it about 30 miles to the dealer without the clutch.

Ease off throttle to unload the gear box, slip tranny into neutral, rev the engine to match groundspeed in lower gear...ease the tranny into the lower gear while holding the revs.. no clutch required. Be gentle or you will grind the gears.

Don't jam it hard, esp down into 1st, or you will be tearing up the synchro.

I understand you can upshift and downshift without a clutch (and can do so), but how exactly do you put the car into first from a stop with no clutch?

On some cars, you can start the engine with 1st gear in and it will start and not stall. On cars that do stall when you start them 1st engaged though, I have no idea.

You may want to be careful and mention which fcar you can do this on. I can tell you it cannot be done on a TR. The box is notchy, no way to get it smooth. I have tried on many cars in the past 15yrs, my ferrari is not one I intend on trying.....but hey if you got money to burn.

I drove a 328 40 miles to the shop once with the clutch cable broke (clutch engaged). When coming to a stop, you turn the motor off while in neutral. Otherwise the motor will restart. Once stopped, you get it in gear, usually a higher gear first, then to a lower gear. When you want to go, turn the starter and away you go. I found it easier and smoother to do this in 2nd or 3rd gear. With a warm car and battery, the starter moves the car easily. Obviously, it is best to try not to have to stop, but that is the procedure should you ever have to do it. I learned clutchless driving on an 18 wheeler 30 years ago, so not a big deal. I would suggest anyone who wants to experiment to do so on a non Ferrari.

With the engine off I put the car into 1st gear. I then turned the ignition key and the car started jumping forward until the engine started. After that I shifted sparingly and carefully.

    True and interesting.

When I owned a Kawi Ninja ZX-7 a racer friend of mine showed me how to upshift without using the clutch.

I've long since lost "the touch", and I'm not willing to try it in the Ferrari, but I know it can be done.

Rick, I've changed gears without the clutch in a similar vintage TR to yours. In fact, I do that in almost all manual transmission cars that I drive. I've never had a car balk at it.

It can be done on any car, but I won't try to teach anyone how to do it here. Don't want to get blamed...

I had a old VW rabbit that I never used the clutch on and also a 95 Honda civic was a breeze not to use the clutch also.

I used to shift without the clutch on my Kia. That sort of car makes it easy (psychologically). Got it done smoothly 95 % of the time (up and down).

Wouldn't do it on a more expensive car.

I do not think you can get going without a clucth.

Shifting without clutch is a matter of skill/touch. When I was racing bikes a lot of other guys told me I was wasting time using the clutch. Experts can upshift and downshift. I tried and tried but I could not get the hang of it. I think the main reason was my budget and I was afraid to break anything. You really have to just do it. I was too tentative. And with the long throw of the Ferrari shifter you'd have to be either real good or have no regard for the transmission.

One time in a BMW (car) I accidently started from a light in third. I reached down and jammed it into first without fully depressing the clutch. I broke the trans intake shaft right in two.
