Hey guys I'm heading to the Canadian GP with the parents in June and was wondering if any of you regulars could throw out some good restaurant suggestions. We're thinking about (but not limited to) a good Steakhouse, Italian, and maybe Japanase or Asian. Thanks for the help.

We had a very nice meal Saturday night of race weekend a couple of years ago at New Town, J Villenueve's restaurant. Varied menu, food was better than it had to be. Not outrageously expensive.

I'm with you there ! and don't forget the pickled cherry peppers too ! I've been lurking here forever and it takes a food question to get me out of the closet - HA ! This year will be my 20th Canadian GP and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Maybe ask the local contingent in the Canada section. Montrealers tend to know their restaurants.

    *cough!*

Let's put it this way.....a bad restaurant in Montreal is hard to find. ;)

Pretty much any place in the downtown core is fine. Montrealers are VERY unforgiving with bad restaurants, so they don't last very long.

For my money, 'Les Caprices des Nicholas' on Drummond Street is the best in Montreal - atmospheric with fantastic cuisine! Au Pied de Cochon is very trendy, very popular, but very noisy. The pig's trotters are just way too much, unless you're a true gourmand who really goes for the neanderthal stuff.

I'm not really sure if its anywhere near the GP, but go to the Bar-B-Barn. Best ribs I've ever had.

My favorite place is the Alpenhaus on St. Marc. It's specializes in Swiss food, is casual, serves the best steak sandwich and palm hearts I've ever had, and has an excellent beer list. It's quiet, unpretentious, and it's a short walk to the Crescent Street festivities afterward. You can usually spot Fernando Alonso there on Saturday or Sunday evening...

I've heard this place is good. Best to make reservations in advance if planning to attend on race weekend.

Gibbys is a landmark located in a very rustic building but the food has been lacking IMO for the last 5 years, one place I always go to when in Montreal is Chez Queux! http://www.chezqueux.com/montreal_french_restaurant.htm

I mean you are in Montreal for crying in the sink.....try some classic old school French food! This place is classic in every sense of the word and the menu has "NONE" of the modern cal-fusion items so popular these days.

I can't recommend it enough and my regular hotel is a few blocks away called The Nelligan.

+1 A 5 star steakhouse. Also 5 star prices! A wonderful city, Montreal.
I think that Quebec is my favorite Canadian city though. It wouldn't be hard to convince me to travel there to watch a car race.

Thanks for all of the help guys. We are eating at Gibbys and Weinstein and Gavinos and then probably some other place we stumble upon. Enjoy the race.

  23. Toque has been the best restaurant, in a city of restaurants, for years. Book now for GP weekend, trust me.

I haven't been there since 2001, so these places may not still be around, but I've eaten several times on Saturday evening at a place called Pizzaiole on Rue Crescent, right in the heart of the "street festival" that usually goes on during GP weekend. And on Sunday I ate at a very good Italian place called Le Latini on Jeanne-Mance that was usually closed on Sunday, but opened on GP weekend to cater to the fans. Do a Google search and you should find info on both places.

Many years ago my wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Gibby's in Old Montreal while on our honeymoon and really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. A few years ago I went back there with a business colleague (male) and, while it was still good, it wasn't quite the same! LOL!
