    I'm looking at an original Canadian TR that was imported to the US and currently passes Michigan smog. Is there any big difference in the US spec cars over the Canadian cars? Do I even dare to try and pass CA smog?

    North American cars are all the same specification, for many years.

    You need a TR guru to answer the California Question though, I dunno.

    As long as you have the original exhaust with cars you should be fine.
    No difference between the us/CDN spec other than the gauge being in Kms, as opposed to miles.
    If its coming from Ontario , have them pull the vin from the ministry to check its ownership layout on the province,

    Canadian TRs from 1990 and 1991 have a slightly different VIN structure, so there IS a difference between US and Canadian specs (at least for these model years). It's not related to the engine (so, I guess this won't matter regarding the smog tests), but it's related to the Safety system (although I don't know the details yet). I will check if I can find out a bit more ...

    Just a small addition: according to the TR workshop manual, there are some parts which are specific to the Canadian versions. This includes:
    * Different front spoiler and front grill
    * Different rear bumper
    * Different safety belts
    * Differences at the dashboard console (like fuel gauge and oil gauge)

    However, I guess this won't matter for the smog tests ...

    From what I understand also 1991 TR are 49 state cars. non-California compliant.

    They are 7500 mile cars. But you are right, not sold new in CA
