Just got a letter on my recent mammogram saying I need further evaluation. They want me back for a “left breast special view” & ultrasound. I've never had a test go this way. Any of you ever have a scare?

Karen, more than likely it's a calcium deposit - which doesn't seem to unreasonable considering your dedication to health... Go to the appointment, though...! Don't put it off... Let us know how everything turned out, though i could practically tell you now that it's nothing...

Yeah, I think they only want more money. Funny how they have one by the short hairs for these things. I can’t feel any lump-thing at all. Although I am quite sore now from squishing so determined find “it”.

LMAO...! You're gonna create a lump that they're gonna want to investigate while you're there...! i would say it's a harmless calcium deposit and you should stop playing mommy mammogram before something bursts... How long until your appointment...?

    Karen,

I hope everything goes well. The only scare I had is when my appendix burst....that's the only scare I ever want to have.

Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

i had a really bad stomach ache when i was a kid... i kept telling my mother and she kept telling me to just relax and that it would go away... i swore to her, over and over, that my appendix burst, and she said, "stop being such a baby!"... It did, of course, just turn out to be a stomach ache... :)

Karen, sorry to hear you have been given something else to worry about. Definitely go get it checked ASAP. Like NNO said, it is probably nothing, but do not procrastinate in getting it checked.

I have a good friend that actually did have breast cancer and elected to go with non-traditional treatments. She's beaten the cancer and is happy and healthier than ever. If it turns out to be something, or if you just want advice, drop me a PM and I'll put you two in touch.

    Keep us posted.

Received the letter today when I got home from work. Called the Imaging Center to find out who the radiologist was that read the film. Someone I don’t know - so I guess I’m in for the long haul. I'll schedule one tomorrow.

Why didn't you schedule when you were on the phone...? Can you call back...? Do they have an answering service that will schedule appointments...?

Forewarning: Some Docs and Insurance Co's are better than others.

My wife's had a few scares & has described what they do and how they do it in detail. Ugh - can't imagine. Suffice it to say, there's got to be a better way to do initial tests than squishing. Why not do Ultrasounds to begin with?

    But, better safe than sorry.

Sorry to hear your troubles. Most of those call-backs don't turn out to be anything, but you should be safe, none the less.

Remember mammograms are really tricky to read, and radiologist's threshold for a call back is low, not out of greed, but out of trying to be as sure as possible with a non-perfect test.

I wish you the best with this, let us know when it turns out OK...OK?

P.S. any micro-calcification may trigger the recommendation for a needle biopsy. While not a fun thing, if it is recommended, definitely do it as it may very well save your life! Remember, most tumors that are curable have no symptoms while they are curable, you have to actively seek them with routine health checks such as this one.

Wishing you the best, Karen. Hopefully, as others have said it is just a harmless "scare" and nothing more. Best of Luck! Don't get too crazy with the squishing! :)

My wife's doctor insisted she had uterus cancer, all the tests confirmed it. After they removed my wife's lump and tested it, it turned out to nothing. All the sleepless nights and worrying, all the tests, and it was really nothing. At first were upset and felt very used, after some time had past, we realized we were happy it turned out to be a false positive. Had my wife had cancer the operation would have only been the first step, chemo and radiation would follow, with the ever looming fear is the cancer spreading, did we get it on time? So prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Good luck.

Both my mother and grandmother have had breast cancer, and my wife is a breast imaging tech. Like others have said, most of the time it's calcium deposits. They need to do additional views to try and make them "disappear" on film. The Ultrasound also gives them a better idea of what's going on. Most of the time it's nothing, but good luck and we'll say a prayer.

On the opposite end of that spectrum. I had a tough Portuguese girlfriend when I was ~18. Watched her gut a pig once (not the fondest of memories). Anyway. Out of the blue one day she's got this horrible stomach pain, we're talking doubled-over, can't speak, can barely breath. Her parents tell her to "suck-it-up" (or whatever the Portuguese equivelant is of that expression). They wait something like 8 hours before calling an ambulance. By the time they got her to the ER, the sepsis had changed her color to the point where she didn't quite look human. 1 emergency surgery, a few antibiotic shock treatments, and lots of praying later ... she was OK. But it was close.
